BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) - Montana State University has placed assistant men's basketball coach Ryan Orton on administrative leave following his arrest early Sunday.

The school says Orton was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor partner/family assault and misdemeanor criminal destruction/tampering with a communications device.

The 34-year-old Orton came to MSU as an assistant in the spring of 2006 from Northwest Nazarene, where he had worked for one season. He had previously worked at Lane Community College and at Eastern Washington University.

MSU Athletic Director Peter Fields said Sunday he couldn't comment until more information was available.

I am sure Huse and msu admin will do what is proper. I doubt it was that big of a deal, the police almost have to do something, no matter what occurred.

Sounds to me like he got in argument with his wife/girlfriend and she tried to call authorities and he ripped the phone cords out of the wall.

Yep. It has to do with taking/damaging/disabling whatever phone she was using to try to call 911. Even unplugging it from the wall (gently), or taking the cell phone from someone qualifies for that charge.

It is sometimes a felony, although I don't know what the trigger is from the midemeanor to the felony for it.

And no, I don't have first hand experience with this charge. But I know several who have.

Nothing was ripped out of the wall. No one was touched. Minor incident. Cops called day after incident. Female cop. I hear it may go away. Coach is a good guy and straight-laced.
