Move over MSU, EWU has become the bigger rival.

Interesting logic....lots of Griz fans on here would say MSU isn't a rivalry because they never win. We've lost 5 of 6 to EWU, including 4 straight. Perhaps we're getting a sense of what MSU feels when playing us?

Good post. The UM/MSU rivalry will always be strong but will it be relevant? For the Griz, beating MSU has become like the Globe Trotters beating the Washington Generals. It's just kind of expected. It's kind of like Kansas/ Kansas State or some other in state rivalry that has lost it's luster. The problem for Griz fans is when they think beating MSU means something...
The game is just not a resume booster anymore. Just look at how many Griz fans last week thought that the big win against the Cats was the evidence they needed to expect the Griz to roll into Cheney and dominate Eastern.....
I agree with that. Years ago, I worked at the U of Wash and had a meeting with Don James. He had just lost to Oklahoma State in Seattle, where the Huskies were strong favorites in the Seattle Times and the regional news outlets..He shrugged and said it was really dangerous for teams, like Washington, so far away from the rest of the country because they start to believe their own press releases, and forget that other teams are also on scholarships and surrounded by top tier talent. I think UM has a bit of that...and that is what shocks people when other teams beat the Griz...There is a price to pay for provincialism if you play in a wide spread league like the Big Sky.

As someone who lived in Montana for a long time, I don't think EWU is a bigger rival to UM as MSU is. The Brawl goes back a lot longer, divides families, friends, work places and the state (although there is more Griz than Cats in Montana).

With that said, I think EWU/UM has become a more competitive game over the course of the last decade and the rivalry will continue to grow. EWU most certainly considers both MT schools to be a bigger rival than PSU, but unfortunately, that's because we don't have an in state foe and Missoula and Bozeman are both closer or just as close regionally, in addition to both being much more competitive.

In short, EWU/UM is a great rivalry, but I don't see it being bigger than "The Brawl." Maybe a couple decades down the road, but not currently, IMO.

I say who gives a shit. Don't pay such homage. Until they put more than a plumber's salary into their facilities, I will acknowledge nothing, other than they won a football game against vastly inferior coaching.

Is that like saying "the suit makes the man"?

I Guess you could use that expression, yeah. But you know and I know, look the part, be the part. ewoo fans don't want to admit it since it partially invalidates their fleeting rise to power, but its true. You can conquer the world, but when you go home to your grass roof mud hut and your enemy continues to reside in the lap of luxury, you just aren't doing it right.

It kinda makes me sad for them.

Couldn't agree more. I feel very sad for EWU. Beating us four times in a row and advancing again in the playoffs. I feel bloody awful for them.

Clearly, sarcasm and "jokery" are not your strong suits.

Get with the program, or post in more "serious" threads.

See what I did there?

Also, and this is just me being curious, but are you by chance British? I'm getting a strong sense of that over the course of several posts.

I'm confused. And also British. I love American football. Love the Griz and appreciate the dominance over us by EWU. Very similar to the German dominance over my home country years ago.

Not to pile on, but I'm not sure our relationship qualifies as a rivalry of late, and Spokesman Review columnist Blanchette seems to agree:

"Still, it’s funny to recall back when EWU’s tight little circle seemed vexed that the Grizzlies wouldn’t acknowledge even the hint of a rivalry – and now the Eagles have all but expunged it.

Four wins in a row? Five of the last six? Nine playoff wins in the last five years to Montana’s three? A tension-free three-score breather in an FCS loser-out?

Rivalries need more juice than this."

Blanchette can go f*** himself.

One could argue that MSU is a bigger rival to EWU if you look at competitiveness. The MSU game was much more competitive than either of the UM games.

Results between EWU and MSU aren't really that close. I mean some of the games have been legendary like this year's EWU comeback in Bozeman and 2004's high scoring slugfest in Bozeman when Erik Meyer led a huge comeback, but other than that the games haven't been that close and the overall record since 2000 has EWU with an 11-4 edge in the series. Pretty lopsided really.

Griz Granny in tweed threads?
