Move Curran to DB

With the 20+ WRs competing for playing time, there's no room for anyone who has questionable hands. He has crumbled when it mattered most. I'm not giving up on the guy, I think he can be a solid player, but with Eaton, Taylor, Toure, Nagler, and Corbin vying for time at WR next season....we can't waste many more snaps on guys who have literally dropped the ball when we needed it most.

Get him on defense, get him acclimated. He could be a good one back there.

Actually Toure and Corbin might jump over a lot of guys on depth chart after watching a few play this year and the inability to get separation.
 
I have mixed feelings about Curran's ability. He shows flashes of brilliance, but has definitely made too many mistakes this year. He seems like a hard worker and is still young, so plenty of time to improve. Don't think he's at their level at all but, players like Mariani and Sambrano improved quite a bit from their sophomore to senior years.

When asked about the red shirts at QB Club a few weeks ago, he said that we have two wide receivers in that group who are as good as anyone we have playing this year. And that wasn't in any way said as a knock on our current guys. I think you could be right...
 
I'm really excited about the upcoming players we have on this team and I think over the next few years we'll really see the standout guys make big leaps. That said there's something to also be said about experience and how it translates onto the field. This system change/coaching change pretty much overhauled the WR corps and now has a 2-deep that's mostly all sophomores and RS-frosh. Guys like Curran and Calhoun (and McGee and Bingham) didn't have the luxury to work their way into familiarity of the game. Calhoun went from redshirting to starting. Curran went from a handful of catches and some light ST duty to the #1 WR.

I think because of that leap and how these guys were thrust in we've seen what happens from time to time with young guys, good games mixed with challenging games. More on-field execution errors than expected, some drops, missed blocks, etc. We, as fans, are used to having a nice blend of experienced WRs and younger guys that work their way in, but not so much this season.

Curran's stat line, 33 catches (T-3rd), 527 yards (2nd), 10 TDs (1st) , 58.6 ypg (3rd).

Just my opinion but moving him to DB/CB would be a mistake. He's got 7 more total yards than JLM with 23 less catches.
 
Interesting thread, given that neither Curran NOR Calhoun caught a pass in the 1st half Saturday....Curran was targeted just 3 times in the first half, with one flat out drop. The others were terrible passes...not sure how anyone could make a blanket statement about Curran's performance given the two bookend, diametrically opposed performances the past two weeks...

I have been going back and forth on this thought as well. Curran was originally recruited to UM as a DB I believe. He is an athletic, physical player who has good hands....for a defensive back.

Curran had FBS offers for Safety. None for WR. WR is a totally new (Montana) thing for him.

Coaches are HIGH on Dareon Nash, the 1st Team All-CIF receiver.
 
Curran is top 10 in the country for receiving touchdowns. I do think he will improve alot from now until his senior year. Lot's of young competition at that position to push him for playing time though next year.

Agreed. Very good post. He is very young and will get better. He doesn't have bad hands. Improved route running, which he will get better at, will translate to more separation, more confidence, and fewer drops.
 
I realize they aren't the same player, but remember Ellis Henderson in 2012 and how he was thrust into a spot he probably wasn't ready for (remember the end the EWU game?)

Then compare that to EH in 2013.

Let's not give up on Curran just yet. He's shown flashes of brilliance.
