Mountain West?

Are you sure about that for the bball program? Everything I searched said the otherwise, that the bball team can play in the tournament provided its status isn’t changing. Maybe I looked at the wrong stuff?
I think you are right because FCS and FBS are in the same division for basketball it doesn’t effect their postseason eligibility status. If a school is moving from D2 to FCS the would have to sit out the first couple of tournaments because D2 and D1 do not have the same NCAA tournament for basketball like FCS and FBS do.

Montana would already be competitive as they are now. If they increased to 105, watch out.
And being in the big sky we cannot currently go past 63 as they voted not to allow increases after the house settlement. I don’t believe the MVFC capped their schools after the house settlement though I doubt any will be able to afford 85 much less 105.

I heard NDSU is interested in moving up but Montana is not. The FCS will go down in quality if NDSU and SDSU leave.
If you want to see how intrested Montana is in moving up, just observe how the soccer program has been handled this off season. That alone should show Montana does not care to put out ANY extra expenses or the energy it would take to accomplish a move up.

I would expect the Mountain West to want to add existing FBS teams like New Mexico State before adding FCS teams and if they do add FCS teams, it sounds like it will be NDSU and SDSU instead of MSU and UM.

I would hope the MTW is smart enough to understand that an FBS Montana would be better then an FBS NMS. NMS has had 40+ years a D1 football and accomplished little. Montana has Boise State potential, except for the financial.

Montana would face many additional costs that New Mexico State would not because they are already FBS. New Mexico State already has 105 scholarships for example. From what I understand Montana’s athletic department does not want to pay these additional costs and that is why they will not be leaving the FCS anytime soon. NDSU on the other hand is more open to spending more money to move up. I don’t know where MSU and SDSU are on it.

Remember FCS and FBS are football only classifications.

There has been so much movement in both the MW and PAC conferences, I had to remind myself how both are constructed for 2026.

MWC: AF Acad., Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, N. Illinois, San Jose St., UNLV, UTEP, Wyoming

PAC 12: Fresno St., San Diego St., WA St., TX St., Utah St., CO St, OR St., Boise St.

I guess the PAC should be called the State conference.

Does UM athletics have any extra money?
