3.5 gpa average for Westwood ? Grade inflation!?n
UH, no...of the nearly 3,000 apps I reviewed all were the very top of their classes world wide...UCLA is not your average public university. Personally, I would choose Cal Tech if I were a genius level math and science kid...no other school in the West can compare. UCLA too big, Stanford too smug, USC to foreign, Berkely..well, interesting.

USC is "too foreign" but UCLA isn't? When were you last in Westwood?

Thank God for that. Diversity is what makes California great.

According to this State will have about 10,000 new students next year. Some misrepresentation?

BYU the most "desireable" college in Utah? I guess that is a matter of opinion. I would rather have my eyes gauged out and my teeth pulled out with pliers than go to school there.

MSU has one big advantage right now.

Cruzado > Engstrom

Kick his ass to the curb. Can you imagine Rolls leading anything right now other than a book club? Killing me.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention. RE is producing in every area that matters. Athletics, Academics, fund raising, foundation, research, reputation, are all doing well. Applications are up Graduations have broken records )for both schools) Heck hes even got Time Magazine behind him. You might find a few disgruntled boosters still pissed about the firings and the Sanctions but just about everybody else has moved on and is not looking backwards. You might as well get used to the fact RE is going to be here a long while. The real influence was standing on the platform getting honorary doctorates a few weeks back.

Cruzado has done a fine job as well but I think you will start to see her local marketing efforts to ex students using obama stimulus dollars (now that they have dried up)and the BOR "bonus program" changes paying fewer dividends UM's efforts for out of state applications will start to pay off (as this years applications seem to indicate.

Apparently you have your head up your ass. RE has set Griz athletics back 30 years by his actions. Applications are up? Seems enrollment figures must have been mis-reported in the press then, and the budget shortfall really didn't happen. What does Payne or Poe have to do with anything, please explain. 'Moving on' and 'not looking backwards' is a joke, right? I think you will find that there are more than "a few disgruntled boosters" out there.

RE has set Griz athletics back 30 years by his actions.

How, exactly? I'm not arguing, necessarily, I'm just curious what you think he's done that will have that kind of negative effect.

What I see is an entirely new sport on campus; what appears to be two absolute top-notch coaching hires; a new academic center underway; funding for the new locker room/weight room a university wide top priority (and evidently largely funded); personal attendance at nearly every sporting event on campus; the specific mention of athletics and student-athletes in the school's ten year plan (something you'd be hard-pressed to find at most FBS schools say nothing about FCS level); etc.

Now, I understand the firing of Robin and Jim pissed people off. I get that, and I wouldn't expect many to necessarily agree with those decisions. I also get that many think RE sold UM out with the NCAA negotiations, although recent input by outsiders would suggest that may not necessarily be accurate. But in any event, how do those actions set UM athletcs back 30 years? I'm curious.

EverettGriz, this soap opera has lasted two and a half years. No need to rehash all the angles, but you have mentioned some. How many recruits, in any sport, have looked at UM and decided to go to the competition? Did any of Engstroms actions/inactions/silence have any impact on Tinkles or Selvigs ability to recruit or Tinkles departure? Admissions took a hit, and the budget suffered. And Engstrom is silent, content on what he has produced. Yes, Royce, lets keep Mick on for another year. Finding a new, competent, permanent HC can wait. I would say the overall impression of Griz athletics is somewhere in the pre-Don Read era. " RE is producing in every area that matters" ? I don't thnk so.

Good post. And on this we agree entirely:

this soap opera has lasted two and a half years. No need to rehash all the angles

And you raise some interesting points, although it could be argued that they are rather subjective regarding the impact to athletics. Yes, Mick is back, and I agree that's not necessarily a great thing, but it's important to note that many Griz fans think it is. This goes to the root of my point: as the president of a large university, you're probably going to piss off roughly half the people no matter what decision you make, while at the same time the other half of the alums are patting you on the back and pulling out their checkbooks. Nature of the beast.

And yes, enrollment is down and consequently the budget is hurting. And that sucks. But I'd contend that's due to the negative press that UM got (which was going to occur no matter who was Pres) and the cyclical nature of enrollment. Two or three years ago we were kicking msu's ass in enrollment, and that was under RE's watch. Two or three years before that, they were kicking our ass under Dennison. It's been that way for years. Now, if we don't see that trend start to change over the next 2-3 years, then I agree we've got a leadership problem. I'm just not ready to put all the blame on the admin yet.
