Mornhinweg surfaces as OC candidate for Jets Circus

Late in the season, when it became apparent that offensive coordinator Tony Sparano would be fired, the Jets formulated a short list of possible replacements. The two names atop that list were Norv Turner and Cam Cameron.

Turner is expected to be named the Browns' offensive coordinator, but as expected, Cameron has emerged as a leading candidate in Rex Ryan's search for a new offensive boss. He's also showing interest in former Eagles coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and Bengals assistant Hue Jackson.

Ryan was on the same Ravens' staff as Jackson and Cameron in 2008, so the familiarity factor would seem to give them an edge. All three have coordinator and head-coaching experience.

In Cameron's five seasons as the Ravens' coordinator, the Ravens ranked from 13th to 22nd in total offense. He helped develop QB Joe Flacco, but the gig ended after a Week 14 loss to the Redskins. John Harbaugh fired him.

Jackson landed in Cincinnati as the assistant DB/assistant special teams coach (go figure) after a one-and-done as the Raiders' head coach. In his two seasons with the Raiders, the first as the coordinator, they finished ninth and 10th in total offense. Jackson is known for his work with quarterbacks, and that is important to Ryan.

Mornhinweg is coming off a seven-year run as Andy Reid's coordinator in Philly, where the Eagles fielded a top-10 offense in five of those seasons. But Mornhinweg played a secondary role in the offense to Reid. If the Jets hire him, it will fuel speculation about them signing Michael Vick.

The Jets probably won't hire a coordinator until a new GM is in place, but that should happen in the coming days.

Hiring Cam Cameron would be another colossal mistake. Ryan said he wants a more wide open approach. Well then Hugh Jackson isn't the answer, he likes to run the ball.

MM looks like his best choice if he's looking to go wide open a bit.

He's going from one sinkin ship to another....

Good for him that he actually gets to be on one of the biggest ships in the first place.

A chance to fail is better than no chance at all.

He still has blood on his shirt from the last person/animal he ate.

Gives new meaning into a person telling someone to "put their gut into it".

Well said.

Well, as a Diehard, Green-blooded, Unrepentative Jets fan for over 45 years... I like the hiring of Marty. Unfortunately for the Ex-Griz QB, it's going to be a process where he's stuck with a macho-minded throwback at the helm, who's personnel decisions at the skill positions on offense have all but ruined the Jets for the next 3-4 years. I hope Marty keeps Lex around tho... I felt he did an incredible job at fullback this season and really improved with his blocking. We know he can catch the ball out of the backfield, and his special teams play stood out. Word of advice for Marty tho... don't attach your future to Rex. He'll be gone in one year. Show some initiative and maybe you'll be in the mix for the head job in 2014.

Marty and HC jobs should be mutually exclusive.
