More FBS Realignment News

The Kansas City Star is reporting that Mizzou has an SEC offer, that it is keeping under wraps for now.

This is what stood out to me because this is what I think will happen. The Pac-16 with the OK and TX schools will happen, and the leftovers from the Big 12 and Big East, joined by the strongest teams left out they can find. BYU (better hope it happens fast after last week, lol!) Boise State, and TCU.

Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle wrote:: "If Oklahoma and Texas do join the Pac 12, the Big 12 and Big East will create some kind of merger. Houston, Boise, BYU, Air Force and one or two others will be invited to join in the conference."

This scenario, which I think is pretty likely, is the best hope for a school like USU and maybe the Griz, if the Griz were willing to to go, to get an MWC invite.

WIth the Pac-16, SEC at 14, and ACC at maybe 16 (Rutgers and UConn rumor), will the Big Ten sit tight at 12? Notre Dame already reiterated that they aren't going Big Ten.

SEC said about 20 mins ago that they have invited no one but TAMU.

The SEC also said they weren't interested in expansion while A & M was filing the papers to withdraw from the Big 12.

Obviously the Griz/cat game plus usually 1 or 2 more games like EWU. Don't get me wrong I love going to a Griz game no matter what, but I would like to see them regularly play better caliber teams. I'm not saying I want them in the SEC or anything because that's just ridiculous. I guess I'll settle for what we have as long as they quit with the D2 schools.

MWC would be awesome even without AF, Boise, and BYU. We'd have games with Colorado State, Wyoming, SDSU, New Mexico, Utah State, Nevada, and Hauck's UNLV. OOC games with BYU, Boise, Utah, Idaho, Washington State, Oregon State, Colorado.

Good Conference fit, great OOC and Conference footprint.

It's a nice BB Conference with UNLV, Utah State, New Mexico, and Nevada also.

NavyBlue, no matter what happens out there, it will still come down to "Show me the money!"

As it was pointed out in about 4,000 threads, a 'move up' requires $5 to $10 million, or more, up front. Then it requires another $4 to $5 million increase to the school's annual athletic budget. The State is not going to provide a penny more to U of M. So whom is going to cough up this much cash each and every year? I don't have an answer to that question, nor have I seen anyone else come up with a real answer either.

In addition, after those possible changes the "New MWC" will look pretty much like the old WAC did. No offense intended, but without TCU and Boise the new Mt West will be at or near the bottom of the FBS barrel. I would like to see the Griz play your Utah St. or even New Mexico St. rather than Northern Colorado, yet I don't think the huge cost to do so can be justified.

Further, I suspect this issue is about to resolve itself. I believe the entire FBS will ultimately split apart. The money conferences (SEC, PAC-X, etc...) will take their TV contracts & National Championship bowl games and boot the rest off their playground. At that point the NCAA may loosen requirements to make it easier (and cheaper) for the upper tier of FCS to combine with the remaining lower tier of the FBS. When that process is finally complete the Griz should join with Utah St., Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and the rest in what will be the (then new) 1-AA. I suspect you will see this process finish unfolding this decade. I could be wrong, but everything to date seems to point towards this eventual conclusion. So see you in the new Mt West in about 2017.

I agree with Grizzlies1982. When this thing shakes out and I think it wll happen in the next year you will have your super conferences and everyone else. I think the NCAA will come up with a hybrid FBS/FCS and the remaining conferences will reform. I still think there will be a Big Sky but teams like UT State, Nevada and Idaho will be in the Big Sky. Things are moving really fast so stay tuned!

The college football landscape has always been about a two class society of the haves and the have nots - one an unofficial NFL farm system and the other where the term 'student athlete' actually has some meaning. I wonder why the ncaa doesn't just wash its hands of the BCS and the BCS institutions form a non-related, tax paying business unit of it's football program and run it like a private enterprise. It would be an interesting picture indeed if the IRS stepped in and put an end to the tax exemption for top tier college football programs.
