Moody

There’s absolutely no way he has another year. This is his sixth season. He used his Covid year to come here. He was at UND for 3 years, at SUU for 2 years, and now UM for a year. That’s a redshirt and a Covid year plus the traditional 4 years. Unless he gets a medical year which I’m not aware of him having any major injuries that I know of, then his clock should be up.

Please explain. I hope he's Griz next year. He's a father and husband too. Financially, how can it be justified? Does his wife earn good $$? I don't understand, how he'd be eligible for 1 more season, family and finances aside.

Grizfan-24 and I discussed this towards the bottom of this thread. I believe he has another year based on the fact he was injured for enough of one of his seasons at UND to also qualify for a medical redshirt in addition to his Covid and regular redshirt year. Grizfan-24 disagreed:

https://egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopic.php?t=90601

I believe it is somewhat analogous to this situation:

Don’t just say he has one more year. Explain to us how he has one more year because otherwise the math doesn’t add up. Don’t be a dick!

He has been a HUGE addition to the team. We would be struggling even more without him. I never knew much about him prior to transferring in. He is a silent (unassuming) assassin and fun to watch play.

I bet you remember him killing us in the game with SUU in the tournament, same style , shoot the ball.

From what I can tell, Moody has played in 3 Big Sky Tournament Games:

2022 Loss to PSU. 3 points (1-10 from 3)
2021 beat UNC. 3 points. Lost to MSU. 2 points.

Previous games against Montana:

2020 - DNP in UND loss.

2021 - DNP in the two 1-pt SUU victories at SUU during Covid.

2022 - 6 points in 82-74 home win. 3 points in 78-67 loss.

This week, eGriz has told me:

Moody is an all-around good human being
The best catch and shoot shooter in the history of Montana basketball
And apparently lit up Montana at some time in the past

Moody has officially reached Bill Brasky status:

“I remember one time Brasky took his family to Sea World. They were watching Shamu the whale when Brasky got splashed. So Brasky yells, ‘I’m Bill Brasky and no one gets me wet!’ So he climbs into the tank, grabs Shamu, and throws the whale into the audience, splashes him and yells, ‘How do you like it?’ And then damn if Brasky didn’t step in there and finish the show.”

Amazing what happens when get around quality coaching.

Over the two years Moody was at SUU, SUU won a Big Sky regular season championship and had the best conference record over that period. In a few years at SUU, Todd Simon took that program from nothing to the top of the Big Sky.

“At the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, Simon was named Big Sky Coach of the Year, NABC District 6 Coach of the Year, the winner of the 2021 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award, and a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award and the Hugh Durham Award.”

So not really sure what you are referring to.

E-Griz also told us this week, in no uncertain terms, that you’re not a fan.

No big deal. We get it. To each his own.

He has one more year.

Last time I asked Aanen about this, he said he was confident he'd get a 7th year because of injuries that cost him time early in his career.

His wife's parents are retired and moved to Missoula for the season, living in a vacation rental. He joked that the biggest obstacle for him to playing next season was either convincing them to stay or finding alternative child care help

I'll check in on this this week. But he definitely MIGHT have another year.

Sounds like the final word(s). "Definitely MIGHT have another year."

He has one more year and is coming back.

Correct. IF he can afford daycare. Needs NIL. He'd represent so well for any business. He's solid. A great dad, husband and person. Some business has to step up. PM me if you are interested.

Here is the way it was explained to me. Mind you, this was 15 years ago, so things may have changed.

A medical RS year is the same as any other RS year and counts the same toward the total number of years allowed to complete the 4 playing years. It will take some sort of special disposition from the NCAA for Moody to get another year. I'm sure that it is possible. Not sure how likely it would be. I think the coaches or administrators would know if he has already got some sort of dispensation. I think a medical RS year can only be granted if a player played in less than 30% of his teams games. With the COVID year thrown in, you get 6 years to complete 5.

He is certainly one of the better players in the BSC this year.

Was limited to nine games as a sophomore in 2019-20 due to a torn labrum… Redshirted during the 2017-18 season.

You don't get two RS years even if one of them might have been a medical hardship year. We went through this with Damian Lillard when he broke a bone in his foot. I suppose it is a remote possibility that the NCAA could grant a 7th year. The only exceptions that I am aware of are for millitary service and religious missions.

His clock started fall 2017 and will end in the spring of 2023 without some sort of special dispensation from the NCAA.

While the 7 years might be good for Griz hoops and football and those players what a shitty deal for younger players. The players stuck in the Covid years during high school continue to get the short end of the stick.

The blessing in disguise, smaller jcs and ccs are much easier academic and personal transitions. If they do well, they can have better offers later. Personally, I'd prefer playing time and growth of a smaller school over riding the pine and social challenges. I'm a big advocate of jcs and ccs.

I think they are great also. But also remember those increased numbers are going to squeeze out a lot also. And correct me if I'm wrong but I believe many of those JC kids were given a 3rd year because of covid also. We only have two JC's that play hoops in MT (a bunch in Wyo and ND) and none that play football in either state (except for NSSCS in Wahpeton). It all trickles down. Those kids really got squeezed. I'm not saying right or wrong but a real unfortunate consequence for that particular group.

Moody is a very good player and there is no question that his returning for another year would greatly help UM's chances. However, with what you have already signed, it means that TD will likely have to cut a couple of your current players. That's always a hard thing to do.
