Montana's upcoming front 7

As a defense, I like the concept that you can put pressure on a QB and attack the run game with just your front 4 lineman. We saw a lot of that from Alabama last night with Clemson running to the outside instead of up the middle. Deshaun Watson can run though, and made that hard at times for the Tide's front 4.

It makes it nice to not have to bring pressure all the time (and gives you more men to cover in the passing game), as Ty Gregorak often did with Montana's front 7.

I hope whoever our new DC is incorporates that into their philosophy and play calling, or already has that mindset.

Bama's front is straight up nasty. Not gonna be able to replicate that at our level.

Florida had a defense that was almost as dominant as Bama this year, and their's looked much different. They were much stronger and deeper in the secondary, a more back-end oriented defense. That's sort of the way I feel our defense is moving, with guys like Jerrin Williams, Sandry, Crow, and Rassmusen getting lined up at the safety positions. Our LB corps looks deep and nasty as well.

If we can shore up some depth at DL and keep a steady drip of CB's coming in, I think we have a good looking group on defense for the next couple of years.

The depth in the secondary and LB makes me hope we gravitate towards a 3-4....but obviously multiple looks. Bama sort of has the 3-4 figured out.

Ya Bama's Dline had 3 first round picks on it. I think having a dominant D-line is the number one key to getting to a chipper. NDSU is the gold standard right now, you have to beat them for a title...they run the ball right up the gut. We need dudes who can stop that.

Agree we need a defense that can stop the running. However, we need an O-Line who can block to create a running game 1st. If you notice, the constant for NDSU is a great blocking O-Line? If we have a O-Line who can protect and block, we score, if we score, that makes the other team have to pass more, just like every team that plays NDSU, they have to pass more because they are always behind.

Agree we need a defense that can stop the running. However, we need an O-Line who can block to create a running game 1st. If you notice, the constant for NDSU is a great blocking O-Line? I do like that Stitt uses tempo. We all saw that Alabama used tempo to penetrate Clemson's defense. Just like Montana used tempo to wear down NDSU's defense in the FCS kickoff.

If you watch the NDSU rematch in December, notably during the 2nd half, NDSU motioned at the line to bring another man over to the strong side, but then ran the ball back to the weak side via the outside. That really killed our chances of stopping their run game.

For the future, Montana's upcoming front 7 need to implement ways to bring pressure with just our front 4. I'm a believer that muscle and speed are more important than weight for a defensive line.

High school-college-pro- in fact every level of football has the problem of finding good linemen to play on every team. Has been that way from the begining.

Style? Run or pass? Does not matter. Good O line is required. Ditto for the Defense!

I also agree. I think that at our level, you sometimes have to take a risk on a "late bloomer" as well. If they are a big dude with athletic ability, sometimes need to coach them up for a few years to see what you have. That being said, if we end up with 8 stars worth of O-line this recruiting season, at least 1 of those boys will probably be in the rotation this season.
