Montana's Best Dunkers

Kral's secret in junior high (Will James Junior High, Billings) was to wear ankle weights while walking around school. Get your middle schoolers on this plan and they will be like Kral :)

Tom Ferch was well versed in the theory of plyometric training and used it as part of the Runnin' Rangers practice.

Did they do it everyday as conditioning? Also, on Kral I thought I remember hearing something like he could palm a basketball so that's why he had a lot of one handed cradle dunks, is that right?

Not from Montana but a Griz....

Derrick Pope around '81

Derrick was good and an all-around great guy, but I think Craig Zanon was better. Coming down the baseline for an alley-oop (sp) was great!!!!!!

It's my understanding that they did plyometric training (depth jumps/box jumps) on a dailiy basis. Side note: Kral still holds the State A record for high jump @ 6' 10".

Kral could palm with both hands which is why in the 1983 Montana-Wyoming All-Star game he attempted to dunk two basketballs during the slam dunk competition. He did not succeed but was close which makes me think at one time he was able to do this while still in high school.

At the same competition, Scott Zanon, had some pretty good dunks also.

Speaking of YouTube..... Here is Matt Dlouhy's highlight tape from college. It has some of his more memorable dunks. I know this thread is about Montana kids......but CDA isn't that far away.....The Dunk against BC still fires me up..... great play.....and even better team basketball.......

Dlunky. Funny.

After watching the Dlouhy video, makes me wonder what happened to him his SR year? He was fun to watch, athletic, very good defender, inside/outside scorer. His Sr year, he just did not seem to care as often. Nonetheless, I very much enjoyed his 4 years as a GRIZ. Too bad a few of his rebound dunks were not on the video. :thumb:

yes, Salish-Kootenai College has mens and womens basketball teams ... and a brand-new 2,000-2,500 seat place to play.

Re Spoja getting fat. When? After college he played a couple of seasons for the Billings CBA team, and then was planning to try medical school. Any idea where he is now?

Chris Spoja never played for any Billings CBA team. There hasn't been a CBA team here in many years.

He did play wide receiver for The Thunderbolts, the indoor football league team. He was quite the player and a big fan favorite.

Spoja played hoops for the Billings RimRockers the IBA or IBL team that was there in the late 90's early 00's before they went under around the time the arena team started up.

How could I forget the RimRockers?

I don't know maroon the 2 seasons they existed should have created such a lasting impression upon us all that we would never forget. Spoja was the only player they had worth watching in my opinion.

ankle weights will do very little for building strength in the muscles one uses to jump, so don't slap ankle weights on your middle schoolers. plyometric exercises are where it's at in regards to building and training the explosive muscles used for jumping. kids shouldn't really be doing plyometrics extensively until high school either, however....can lead to growth plate problems among other things. best thing for your elementary and middle schoolers? get them involved and running around learing how to enjoy sports, rather than focusing on all the other BS....
