The Big Sky Hoops girls' all-star team won the West Regional AAU Championship tournament on July 25 in Las Vegas.

After completing pool play undefeated, Big Sky Hoops beat El Paso, Texas, 57-47 in the semifinals before defeating Jam On It from Las Vegas 63-59 in the title game and finished 17-4 on the season. Area players on the Big Sky Hoops roster included Jackie Mee from Libby, Jordan Pfau from Arlee and Hamilton's Ashley Albert. The team was coached by Hamilton High School coach Mark Albert.

quite remarkable the number of outstanding women basketball players that montana has produced, and it looks like the tradition continues. note the success of our current a.a.u. team above, and also note that three of the state's top stars--ali hurley, joslyn tinkle and jordan sullivan--were not members of this team.

i think we can doff our hats here to robin selvig for the tradtion he's established in montana, especially for the lady griz basketball camps. now that tricia binford has turned the bobcat program around, i think you'll continue to see the state of montana produce exceptional women's players.

I agree city. Montana seems to a have a more than usual amount of talented womens players right now. I think some of these girls, like Ashley Albert, get over shadowed by Josylyn and Ali. I would not be surprised to see Ashley go to UM or MSU and be a solid player.
On the other hand, I think the credit for developing these kids needs to go to the local coaches that work with them. Obviously coach Selvig is an incredible coach and a great leader for womens basketball in Montana. However, I think that you'll find the talented ones coming from areas where passionate basketball people have taken the time to motivate, organize and work with these young ladies. Folks like Mark Albert deserve the credit.

I am hearing that Ashley has given MSU a verbal to play for them. UM and MSU had both offered but UM needed an answer an answer right away. All this took place before the Vegas tournament. On a down note Ashley sprained her ankle at the tournament and could miss bb this year for Hamilton. She will probably miss all of the volley ball season. I have not heard how bad it is yet. I am hoping for a quick recovery. The Alberts are a great family!!

Is there some point in that post? Please clarify...I thought this was about the level of Montana women's basketball....not sure how your comment is relative.

Fear not, its just a little running inside joke. PR meant no disrespect I'm sure. If you read his posts you would certainly give him the benefit of the doubt.

Girls HS BB has improved it seems in Montana.

Look at Class AA's #1 team for most of last season, Butte High. One senior signed with a Big Sky Conference school, and another decided to stay home and play where her dad is heavily involved in the school at Montana Tech. She easily could have played in the BSC.

Butte High returns another strong squad this up-coming season, headed by 2-time 1st team all stater, Nelson (a junior) and a point guard that is exceptional, in my opinion, in McClosky (a senior).

I'm not biased towards the Butte team because that's where I am from, it's just that it's the only girls team I have watched/followed, so it's the only one I can accurately comment on.

I've seen Butte play Anaconda and Big Sky. Butte dominated Class A's best team in Anaconda (shut down Hurley) and lost to Big Sky (Tinkle) for the state championship, but it wasn't because of Tinkle, it was because her teammates stepped up big.

I'm glad girls hoops in Montana is going strong, and glad that coach Selvig has so much talent to choose from across the state. Here's to coach Selvig landing the amazing Tinkle and total floor general in McClosky. Hopefully (eventual 4 time 1st team all stater) Nelson will want to be a Lady Griz as well in the future.

I can honestly say Girls HS Basketball at the upper classes is much better as a whole than Western Iowa, Nebraska, and most of Colorado (due to population in Denver and Co Springs they have more recruited players), except the largest CO schools.

I lived in Omaha for 10 years and seen many great boy's players in Nebraska and Iowa. To be honest, I was spoiled watching HS Boys basketball there. However, girls basketball in that area was pathetic in comparison to Montana Girls HS Basketball. The Montana girls are much better skilled and team oriented. The average program in that area was the equivalent of our B schools. In my time there I only seen 1 program that would consistently be amongst the best in Montana at any level. That program was South Sioux City, NE. That program at the time was consistently ranked top 25 girls program nationally.

That says alot for any HS program anywhere. However, they were not glaringly better than top rated Montana teams. They won their state titles due to no competition at the time. Put that program against Montana A or AA programs and they win a few less State titles.

I can honestly say Girls HS basketball in Montana certainly can hold its own on a national level when it comes to the best players from the state. Our problem is our best players are too spread out through a huge state and next to never get a chance to play together.
