this game was horrible. yeah 4 players scored in double digits, but it's UC-Riverside. They were 2-8. I fail to see why Tinks is playing that many players. Coaching has killed us thus far.

If you don't play a lot of combinations in the pre season, when in your estimation do you try different lineups? I can't wait for this answer.

UC Riverside was 3-5 going into this game, not 2-8. They had a quick team and hurt the Griz with this quickness, especially inside. They also had some pretty good 3 point shooters, at least this afternoon. The Griz did not look great in this game, but did begin to get some production from the 2 guard spot. Hasquet had a nice game on offense. Rundles had a nice overall game. Watching him, it is hard to believe he is a true freshman. It was good to see Matt Martin start hitting some shots. If this continues, it will help a lot. The Griz are not a great team now and certainly, a substitution pattern has not emerged. The starters played a ton in this game and some of them may drag a little in tomorrow's game against S. Dakota State. Speaking of afternoon games, today's was poorly attended as I'm sure tomorrow's will be. I don't think I have ever been to an afternoon Griz game (and I started going consistently in'86) that has been well attended. I hope the Griz scratch this idea starting next year. This year is off to a poor start attendance wise and the afternoon games sure don't help. :twocents:

Shooting 68 % on FTs (17 - 25) is hardly going to impress me. Otherwise an 80 - 65 game hitting FTs. Does anybody ever practise them things?

It seems that EVERY Griz basketball post speaks of our poor ft shooting...

Andrew struggled with his ft shooting today. Nobody else missed more than one. On the other hand, Andrew played his normal solid game. I hate to think where we would be without him. :thumb:

:thumb: for the W and much better shooting. This game should have been a blowout for us. However, we showed much better defense and heart. Hasquet set the tone offensively and was the 1st to sacrifice himself by going for rebounds and loose balls. Throughout the game Ellis, Rundles, and Martin followed suit.

There was much to love regarding this game. Guys busting ass and selling out :thumb: !!! Martin coming up clutch and I think he is the perfect 6 man. Two emotional leaders are emerging in Hasquet and Rundles. I said after the WKU game that Hasquets outburst was a sign of leadership and would be a turning point for this team. The Riverside game appeared to be exactly that for Hasquet. I noticed just as many play calls for him as for Strait. I notice Hasquet being given a green light to take charge. He hit the deep ball, mid range shot, and drove to the hoop. He played with heart and hustle that turned out to be contagious to others. Wayne isolating him and Rundles down the stretch was great coaching. Also Martin came up huge in the 2nd half and in the clutch. 2 of the last 3 games He has come up in the clutch.

This team is starting to take form, and will continue to improve. Like it or not Hasquet appears to be the biggest key this year. As he goes, so go the GRIZ. Now if we continue to get consistency from the 2 position, we are in good shape. Expect the griz to continue to find shots for Martin and Staudacher. I expect a big game from Staudacher soon.

Also the last 2 games I watched Chase very closely. He gets great rebound position. His height is killing him. Last 2 games I counted 6 rebounds he had position on but lost them because of height.

I will not be surprised to see the GRIZ slowly find time for Vanderjagt due to health issues with Sharp and lack of interior play when Strait and Hasquet are in foul trouble or hurting. For those that doubt me regarding Vanderjagt, watch him warm up. There is a lot to like about this kid. I really need to get myself to a few practices and watch him. I want to see what he is doing in practice. Something intrigues me about this kid. Could it be that coodinated 7 footers do not come to the GRIZ very often? Either way I think he will be the perfect compliment to Strait and Hasquet.

Cannot wait for the SDSU game tomorrow. It will be tough going back to back. However, I hope it frees minutes up for Chavez and Vanderjagt. I think Tinkle's patience with Martin is beginning to pay off, and what we saw today from Matt will be what we will see more often. Great job today by everyone!! Extra thanks to Jordan and Rundles for stepping up in leadership. :thumb:

The back to back thing is overblown. High school kids can play 4 games in 3 days during tournaments, and don't have near the depth to draw from. To me, that is all mental. If they can't go back to back then the conditioning program is horrible. :twocents:

I was really impressed with Rundles today. He really showed why he should be in the starting lineup. Scoring 13 points in his first career start is really good for a true freshman like him. I wish I wasn't so hard on Hasquet on the board here after what happened on Wednesday, but I take it back. He showed how he can get out of a nasty slump and pitch in with 18 points. Andrew Strait...typical day at the office with his numbers. Matt Martin getting all those three pointers in the second half off the bench. Couldn't have asked for a better Saturday afternoon from the basketball team. Now if only we got Chavez to start...

...and if the student section got rowdier. I was the only one trying to get inside the heads of the UC Riverside players (you know, acting like one of the Cameron Craizies at Duke). Wearing the UM shirt that Bryan Ellis threw into my section...no joke, I picked up the shirt that Ellis threw into my section at floor level.

Classy for apologizing for being hard on Jordan. Keep in mind he is only a Sophomore. His stinker games will be few and far between. His jr and sr years should be something to behold. I have faith in him and Martin, I know them and know the coaches have faith in them as well. This staff sees a lot of potential and is willing to ride the slumps out moreso than Larry was. This team and each individual will have growing pains, but I have 100% faith in each player and coach.

The future is bright the next 4 to 6 years. We just need to bare with the growing pains and this team trying to find it's identity. I honestly think we will be 10-4 in BSC play this year.

Keep it going griz!!!

PS: fans jump aboard now, football season is over and these boys need your support!!!!! :thumb: :thumb:

Trying different lineups in the preseason is not a bad thing. I'm all for playing players to see how well they can do. You play to win the game though. If player's aren't doing well, you bench their ass. There's game thus far where players were not capitalizing. Playing 13 players is the result of barely beating UC-Riverside, and also contributes to the result of our losses so far.

I am curious if you were at these games since most of the losses came on the road, 3 of them in Orlando. I can point out several instances where Tinks did "becnch their ass"' as you refer to it. I am curious who was playing extended minutes, stinking up the place, and Tinks left them in the game. If you think close games are a result of coaching then you must not watch a lot of basketball. Take a look around the country at elite programs. Basketball is much different than Football. In football more often than not the best team is going to win. In basketball there are upsets every might.

Did Mark Few of Gaonzaga suddenly become a bad coach because Washington State beat them? How about 2nd ranked Pitt barely beating lowly Buffalo today by 3? Buffalo has but a single win. Must be Coach Dixon doesn't know what he is doing right? #20 Nevavda gets spanked by UNLV tonight. How can that happen? Coaching? There were 3 other top 25 teams beaten today by unranked teams. My point is, wining is more important to those ranked teams now and they are getting beat by lesser teams. Reality in the BSC is they are a 1 trick pony when it comes NCAA time. Win the league it means nothing but a host role for the tournament and a 1st round bye. You can go undefeated in the BSC and unless you win the BSC Tourney, you are not going to the NCAA tournament. So Tinks is playing a far better schedule than many of his predecessors did trying to get his team ready for conference play. He is trying multiple cominations in multiple situations. They are trying to identify leaders and go to guys, establish roles. It takes a few games when you lost your 2 leaders from last season.

You don't have to be at a game to make a judgement like this. For the ones I haven't been at, I've seen either on the internet or on tv. I do understand your point for searching for players to play consistently, but you can't expect someone to establish a rhythm when they are only playing around 4 minutes. The coaches should have a good idea of identifying which players to go with after many practices and the games so far. I never said that close games were a result of bad coaching also. As you say the best team is not always going to win. That is true. But for us, coaching is the problem right now. If we keep up the way we're playing, conference play isn't going to be any easier.

Unfortunately the coaches have been limited due to Swift having played hurt, finally not suiting up now to get healthy. Also from what I have heared, Sharp has been stuggling due to medical issues too. That forces the staff to go deeper to find who will work. I feel they are doing a great job.
