Montana vs. Oregon - Wed. Dec 18th 9PM

Very disappointing game for the Griz. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Travis team throw in the towel 8 minutes into the second half. They had 10 days to rest up and this is the result, Travis needs to light a fire under these guys. Owens has been a no show so far, more liability than asset. It seemed like Timmy was the only one with any energy. I agree with a previous poster, at this rate we’ll be lucky to be in the top 4 in the BSC. I hope I have to eat my words.
its going to be a long season, we dont have the bigs to compete this year.

What's with the Griz historically fading in the second half against good teams? We saw it against Washington, both tourney games against Michigan,etc... I seriously don't get it. The opposition is humans...

Oregon is a legit Final 4 type of team. They have beaten Michigan (#5 team in the nation at Michigan), Houston, Memphis, Seton Hall and lost to probably the best team in nation Gonzaga by 1. So enough of ripping these freshman and saying they quit and all that negativity. The game was respectable until the last 10 minutes. The Griz are going to be fine. It is a rebuilding year with a bunch of freshman and some studs waiting on the side to be eligible next year. You know whether or not you like it kids read this stuff posted. Why the hell call out an 18 year kid playing as a freshman a "no show" and a liability in a public forum? Owens is a huge talent with great potential. Timmy competes his behind off. Anderson is working hard on the boards and on defense. They make mistakes because they are young kids for the most part.

As good as Oregon has been, it also got better last night by getting that kid Dante in the line up for the first time. He scored 11 in not much playing time.
Why would anyone think that UM could replace 4 starters, who were very good, with 4 frosh, and immediately be as good as the team was last year?

I'm not worried about ratings or predictions, because every DeCuire-coached team has improved with each game played. They actually hung with Oregon until that late duck run (quack!). A more accurate early test re: how the Griz will start Big Sky play will be at Omaha on Saturday.

Can't really add anything to this thread that hasn't already been discussed. Great competition will prepare you for conference but also expose your weaknesses. Of which we saw many last night:
--Post play. Nuff said. I was hoping Samuelson would make a difference here, since he knows our system and returns as an NAIA All-American. Hasn't happened--and may not. Now I wonder if Selcuk will help. This is really our Achilles heel.

Of the four freshmen getting extensive playing time, I feel he has the highest ceiling--and at a legit athletic 6'8", is exactly what we need. But right now he looks lost. My hunch is that if there would be a freshman scorer to emerge, it would be Vasquez. He probably of thefour freshman has the easiest time creating shots for himself whereas Carter-Hollinger, Owens and Egun seemingly have struggled to find their shots.
Vasquez, aside from a penchant for carrying the basketball to deep into traffic and turning it over, seems most capable of scoring. I just haven't seen enough from Egun or Owens to believe they are going to be that type of scoring answer. Carter-Hollinger is going to be that scavenger scorer because of his rebounding ability.

I'm sure some of what was said on this thread was in the heat of the moment after a loss. I think for a green team like ours to compete with these guys as close as they did for at least 30 minutes is a positive. Travis' teams are a far cry more competitive against P5 schools than Tinkle's ever were. Remember the NCAA tourney games and how embarrassing those were? Those were out of control from the tip. Those teams were never in the game. These guys are worlds more prepared and don't wilt in the face of the fire. I'm really excited for the conference season to get going!

My impression of Montana was of a very well-coached squad who played solid D for much of the game and did a really nice job on Oregon's guards for the most part.
But it's a hard slog with such a size and athleticism and talent differential. Oregon has also already been through a pretty tough schedule with Memphis, Seton Hall, Gonzaga, UNC, and Michigan.
I definitely wouldn't be panicking or anything if I were a Montana fan.
The mid-majors that compete with the big boys are usually veteran clubs. They are teams filled with guys that have played together 3-4 years and have incredible chemistry. That takes time and some growing pains. If there were not one and done at the top programs, the mid-major upsets would be even more rare. I think with this core group of young, talented and hard-working players, the Griz have the opportunity to be one of those special teams down the road.
