Montana v. Sac State Game Thread

The refs gave this one to Montana....there should have been a no call and it should have gone to overtime...just a bad game over all....UM is most certainly not playing to their potential...I get the impression that someone was impressed by Wisconsin's style last year but UM has no inside game to pull it off....The Big Sky Conference is simply terrible..from top to bottom.....

Again, how does anyone know that UM is not playing to their potential?
Unfortunately, we remember most of them last year playing extremely well against far better competition.

Griz win 61-60

Another ugly win, huh? We need to face facts, this team is not nearly as good as they should be this year. Very disappointing so far.

The Griz lost what very well could have been their starting center due to some credit transfer issue (or whatever happened), and have their best player (Cherry) still getting back into the swing of things after being out from a broken foot. Not really sure with those two huge hurdles, plus now losing Deshields now we should be expecting beating the hell out of everyone...

As always, road wins in the Big Sky are tough to come by... We've had close wins on the road in the Big Sky before and the season turned out fine.

I gotta agree. I am very disappointed in the Griz far. They have no killer instinct this year, and zero inside game. Even if they win the conference and go to the dance, they will get blown out in the first game.

Why should they be better?

Two guards returning with another year of experience.

I guess that means that every team that has players returning with experience should be better?

Not saying we should be beating the hell out of people, but you should be able to build a sizable lead when your opponent starts the game 1-16.

except the Griz only made 4 more FG's in the first half and 4 less FT's....Griz did not play much better than Sac in the first half

Griz horrible game? Road win good! Put someone away this year, PLEASE!!! Cherry and Jamar, got to step up, make free throws and be the leaders they are????? Thank god for Ward and Gregory!!! We played way to much half court tonight Tinkle,(Delaney)??? This isnt a conservitive half court team???? Lets play to our up tempo strengths and start playing some ball??? Come on Tinks??? Wow?? Im a supporter, but this team is not the teams he is used to coaching! He has to change his style just for this year?? Love Tinks, but he is boring his team and talent, and he is certainly starting to bore me!!!

YUCK. What a bad feeling in this one.

I feel no different about them...but 2 road wins are not a bad thing

Yup, I agree. Sac will finish in the top 3 or 4 in the conference this year. We got a good win out of this one.

And that fact shows you just how pathetic the conference is. NAU just got embarrassed by Colorado, which is about par for the course for Big Sky teams playing out of conference.
Really? Colorado was, if im not mistaken, in the Top 30 in all of B-Ball this year, if not in the Top 25 at one pnt??? They have a great team oleboy?? Just sayin! Im sure Grizrule has the facts on Colorado??

I guess it is just you and me that think that this run the shot clock down and take a jumper is not a great thing.

Why/how did sac foul?

Garrity blocking foul......Cherry driving. I couldn't tell. Could have gone either way.

In my opinion it was a block that had to be called. If the guy would have just stood there it would have been a charge but he stepped into Will and that is why it was a block.

Will will get better but he is playing too much time for just coming back and appears to be out of step. Two weeks from now he will be a different player I think.

Kareem is playing too much and doing too much. He has been asked to carry quite a load playing 3 positions and I think the time off will do him good. He had been a little out of control at times and wild on some of his passes. He too will be better after the time off and will get his legs back.

This is a tough road trip and playing NAU first makes it tougher because of the altitude and lack of recovery time in traveling. If DeShields was available I think both Will and Kareem would have had more rest and performed better too.

Just my opinion!!!1

Disappointing that we couldn't put them away in the first half when we had the opportunity with Sac's poor shooting and we didn't take advantage, but a win is a win and getting 2 out of the gate on the road with Will just coming back and losing DeShields and never having our JC transfer--it could be a WHOLE lot worse.

It is a shame the game had to be decided on a call like that at the end---probably could have gone either way--hard to tell on BSTV. But more importantly, it never should have come down to that. We seem to have this problem hitting FT's in crunch time despite our 76% as a team--go figure. And..how do we give up 3 treys late to let Sac back in it? We must develop better poise at the end of the games and a killer instinct during or we will be hurting when we play the Webers of the league---fortunately there is jsut one of them :D!

Lots to work on before the next game on 1/3, but also time for Will to get better conditioned and hopefully DeShields to get healthy. Eighteen more BS games to go and 2 in the "W" column--can't complain too much given everything that has happened. :)

Colorado was ranked #19 in the country a few weeks ago. They've fallen out of the top 25 since losing to undefeated Wyoming, and Kansas (not exactly bad losses there).

For RPI, Colorado is currently #2 in the country. RPI ratings are still a little screwy this early in the season, but Colorado has played a pretty tough schedule so far, and has quite a few good wins. Good wins are over Dayton, Baylor, Colorado State, and Murray State (Murray State's only loss). Colorado has no bad losses. Kansas is #9 in the country (#4 in RPI), and Wyoming is getting top 25 votes now too and is undefeated.

Kinda like football this year! Get a decent lead, and run up the middle, td, run up the middle 3&out, they score, run up the middle, 3&out, they score, and all of a sudden a 15 pnt lead is a tied game and we have the ball, now we are desperate and throw, pick 6 they win :o Tinks is kinda in a position he hasnt been in yet? He needs to make adjustments to this years team! He needs to play to the guys he has got!! Im not a coach, thank god, but this team is the fastest, quickest, and most athletic team we have seen in Missoula(maybe ever, due to his kick ass recruiting), but we are not tall, thick, and we certainly cant make an interier layup or dunk!! Im just pissed cause I see potential in this team, and it involves Pressure D, 3/4 traps, 1/2 traps, full court press, and a up tempo fast ball moving, cutting, lay up making, kick out and 3pnt shooting assault on the rest of the BigSky and who ever else we might face. Its just who we are this year!!! THIS IS THE EXACT REASON I THOUGHT WILL CHERRY SHOULD NOT HAVE WASTED HIS SENIOR YEAR??? :o

2012 Recruiting class ranking. http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=9&c=14&cfg=bb&yr=2012" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As this young class matures and gets experience, Colorado will be back in the top 25. Very very good team

The blocking foul against Cherry was definitely the right call...no matter what side you're on. The defender was actually moving forward when contact was made and the commissioner of NCAA officials, John Adams, specifically instructed officials to recognize and call such plays a block in his preseason review.

Sac made some really tough 3 pointers that gave them a chance to possibly steal this game. I would have liked to see the Griz close it out as well without all the drama, but sometimes the opponent just steps up and makes great plays. Every one of those 3's were well defended. The biggest concern is the missed free throws by the Griz. Hopefully that inspires some guys to shoot a lot more of them in practice.

so what you are saying is that it is OK for a Big Sky team to lose by 50... a Big Sky team can not be expected to play well against the "Big Boys". We should not expect more from the conference and just be OK with it? The way I see it is that no matter how very very good a team is, it should not be OK for a Big Sky team to lose by 50. The Big Sky is terrible right now, and I hate to say it, but UM is not a really good team, they can just benefit from how awful everyone else in the conference is. :coffee:

Sorry! I said some harsh things, but I think some are very true!! Good road win Griz!! Cherry will get better, Jamar will get used to playing with Cherry again, and Ward will continue to score and also start getting 8 rebs a game. Gregory is a hell of a player guys!!! Although Hutch played ok tonight, I would like to see Martin get more time to block shots, hopefully Keron can heal fast cause he is a player, Coleman? starting to question his abilities, Henderson has also kinda been disapointing, Weisner started hot, but might have got a little too confident, thats ok though cause he can find it as long as he doesnt force it?? Even with the style we are currently playing, we will battle Weber for the title! I just want this talent to go a little further, and the only way that can happen is be more aggressive and up tempo. The only short teams ive known to score interior buckets and rebound, are the teams that play to their strenghts! Up Tempo, and Pressure D?
