MONTANA/USC BB GAME STREAMING THREAD 11/11/16

I'm sorry. There was no way the GRIZ were going to win that game. I would guess the message from the P12 commissioner was well made to the officials. Seriously, what were the fouls shots, 41-7?? What a fvcking joke.

FT's 38-11 wow home cooking

And 4 of those for the GRIZ came in the last minute on calls 1/10rh as egregious as the non calls during the prior 39 minutes. Look, I get that USC was "the agrressor". But that was bullshit. Is it really difficult to see why college BB is struggling with attendance and viewership? Even the most hardened SC fan would say that was a joke.

That scoring drought cost us when USC switched to the zone. We have a real good team and we are going to win a lot of games. We should be able to win some of these preseason games and I love the schedule we got.
GO GRIZ!!

Correct me if I am wrong but if the ball hits the backboard and is coming down at the rim, isn't that a goaltend??? Sure looked like it to me, and then the replay the homer announcer says it was a clean block?

That call was absolutely atrocious!

5 of the Griz FTs were in the last minute and a half when it was pretty much over too.

I realize with the athleticism, quickness and length that USC has they're going to get to the line a lot, but still...

The no technical foul on that USC player who drove his shoulder into Krslovic's face intentionally was pure bullshit too. I'm not sure how that wasn't a T.

It happens though for mid major teams traveling to major programs. I think this was encouraging for the Griz to see them keep fighting back against a good Pac 12 team. Would love to see the Griz play them on a neutral court or in Dahlberg of course (like that will happen...).

Good games by Krslovic with 10 points 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Moorehead had 7 rebounds also (along with 9 points). Rorie of course had 21 points and looked very good. This will be a fun Griz team to watch this year!

Yes, you do, Poto. It was still a very close game at that point. There was NO WAY we were getting that call, even though it was patently obvious.

Coach D "I can't really say what I want to say."

Haahaha! And then, "I'd just like to see things even up a little bit when you've got playing their butts off".

Again, unless college BB does something about the egregiousness of shit like this, the game is dead.

After opening the game hot & getting ahead 12-3 (I think), USC called a panic time out & went into a zone D. One of those odd things... the Griz continued to get wide open shots, but they just did not fall. If they'd made even 2-3 of those shots they'd have been ahead at half.

To add to the comments about one sided officiating (the non-call on the goaltending was a puzzler), I think the Griz should have gotten at least three additional charging calls. The shoulder bump was a clear technical. Non-calls like this really cheapen the game.

But coach DeCuire said in post-game comments that that's why they schedule games like this... to learn how to play under adverse conditions. I thought the Griz kept their composure very well.

Agreed, GJ. One of the primary differences between GRIZ teams the last few years and GRIZ teams of the past is that these teams are not the least bit intimidated by the big boys. Play this game on a neutral floor with neutral officials (yes, I'm saying these officials were in no way neutral) and the GRIZ are the better team.

These games will serve us well. But until it becomes a fair contest, we won't win many of them, and fans will go watch MMA or pro wrestling or reality TV or some other shit where the result isn't predetermined.

So didn't see the game but checked the thread occasionally...what did you guys think about the team overall?

A little early to be specific, simply because Michael Oguine did not play. When he does return, I believe this team has incredible potential. The not-so-glamorous good stuff from last night:
• Team rebounding was solid. Except for a couple of scrums on long caroms where USC got 4 3-4 straight boards on the offensive end, the Griz did well... outboarded 39-32 by a MUCH larger, athletic team. They held their own.
• I think a lot of teams are going to play some sort of zone D against the Griz this season (USC really hemmed Walter Wright in last night)but there were good signs that Montana has a good gaps offense and will just get better. They did a good second-half job of getting the ball into Fabijan Krslovic and Jared Samuelson. Krslo scored 10, which is a good starting point for post O. Samuelson showed very solid potential; he's solid, moves well, has a nice variety of low-post moves. But he got banged around a bit on rebounding scrums. Jack Lopez had an off night after getting called for two blocking fouls early.
• The Griz defense looked to be at mid-season form last night and will just get better. Several steals on traps and passes into the key that turned into early O. The irony is that almost all of the early O breakaways the Griz got were snuffed by USC swat blocks (they're a long team)... including two blocks I felt were goaltending. As this team gets comfortable on D, they'll be very good.
* It seemed obvious to me that freshman Sayeed Pridgett got down on himself a bit, but his potential is similar to what we saw with Oguine last year. He's going to be a monster on defense and rebounds well. He got stuffed several times on shots and you could see he was a bit rattled.
• The Griz continue to be streaky on offense, which is probably understandable. But I believe this team will just get better as they play tough competition. Morehead, Gfeller and Lopez will be a great perimeter combo.
• Walter Wright was another player who got a bit frustrated, but Mario Dunn did an outstanding job -- particularly defensively -- in the guard rotation. Griz are ok here. Mario's shot was off last night, but he's got a good shot and I think he'll be ok.
• The team played with toughness and composure, but faltered down the stretch. Here's hoping that an unrelenting lineup of tough opponents makes them tougher. They have the physical potential. The mental toughness will build with each game.
• I don't like to make specific predictions... but this team has the talent to do this year what a lot of folks say they'll possibly do in a year or two.
• Lastly, the Griz have a young star in Ahmaad Rorie. Incredible shot from the perimeter and the high key. He's so deceptive and can usually clear space for a pull-up shot with a slight shoulder dip and the threat of a drive. USC keyed on him hard, because they know him from his time at Oregon. But he played within himself all game. No worries about where the Griz will get the scoring to fill in for Martin Breunig's scoring.

You get bad shooting when you know you're in a crooked game. Players may not show it, but it starts pissing them off and ruining their concentration.

I was very encouraged by this game. Even without Alphonso and Oguine, and despite ice-cold shooting from a few of our guys and lousy officiating, we hung in there. The future is bright for UM hoops.

Exactly. Hard to not force it when you know youre getting few breaks.

A few additional post-game thoughts.

Since DeCuire became coach, expectations have risen for this program. (At least mine.) Big Sky championship? Of course. But a Sweet 16? Hey! Let's go for it! Last night's game demonstrated beyond a doubt that we have the coaching. That tough trapping defense was splendid; ball movement, exceptional. Our kids hustled to the end, despite being out-manned and over-reffed. There's just one question for me: Do we have the talent to be a Sweet 16 team? Here's my assessment.

Rorie: I knew he was a highly regarded recruit out of Washington who started as a true freshman at Oregon. I knew Kyle Sample had labeled him as the most likely Griz to make it to the NBA (ahead of my choice, Michael Oguine.) I knew those who'd seen him play had raved about him. What I didn't know when I met his Mom at the USF game two years ago was that he would turn out to be probably the most well-rounded point guard in the history of Montana basketball after Michael Ray. Hops? Got! Quickness? Yup. Shot? Kid can shoot! Handle? Outstanding. Passing skills? Don't think our kids have adjusted yet to how quickly or deftly he can deliver a pass. Defensive prowess? Held his highly acclaimed Trojan counterpart to seven points, while he got 21. Mr. Rorie is the complete package, and the guy to build around over the next three years. We can almost be assured any time we take the floor against just about any opponent that we have the better of it at point.

Oguine, Moorehead and Pridgett: Definitely was hoping to see Oguine play. But when I spoke to him briefly before the game he said he was probably another two or three weeks away. I'm putting these three together because I think they are all in the category of players, like Rorie, who can take us beyond a Big Sky championship. Oguine, nuff said. Moorehead I was hoping would fill out, but what they hell, Kevin Durant never filled out either. I like him because he can shoot, and at 6'7", he was right in there under the boards battling with those long lean quick-jumping gazelles on the Trojans. My one criticism last night: Didn't shoot enough. Seemed tentative when he should have gone straight up and let it fly. If he'd got hot, it might have opened more space for Rorie. Almost made a desperation three from half-court to end the first half. Wouldn't that have been something! As for Pridgett, definitely athletic, on a par with the Trojans, a Pac 12 caliber athlete. A huge addition to our program. Yes, he got stuffed on some shots he was probably used to making in high school, and it may have affected his confidence. Yet whenever he was on the court, our athleticism got a huge boost. It's just a matter of time before he develops into a big-time star for us.

Krslovic: Oh, man, I just love him. Hustled, fought hard, showed some nifty inside moves against much bigger opponents. Doesn't back down from anybody. I think he's improved dramatically from when I saw him at San Jose. My Tar Heel buddy liked him too. He's a solid Big Sky player, maybe even an all-star. But that said, he's probably a backup on any team that's going to make the Sweet 16.

Dunn, Wright, Gfeller, Lopez: Our four seniors. Demonstrably solid Big Sky players, each with a specific skill that's exceptional, all Tinkle recruits, I believe. Unhappily for them, we simply do not have the inside might this year to get beyond a first round game, even if we were to win the Sky. And I believe all are a cut below the talent level that DeCuire is successfully recruiting to Montana.

Samuelson, DeJong: DeJong looked longer than I remembered, but played only two minutes, so it was hard to tell about him,. Samuelson played more, but clearly has a long way to go before he makes solid contributions to this team.

That leaves Anderson, Akoh, Nicholas and Kramer in the wings, essentially to replace our four much smaller seniors. Boy, do we need their size. Other than Rorie's exceptional talent, that was probably my biggest takeaway from last night's game. We simply do not now have the inside game to compete against the non-con schedule we face this year, and possibly not against Weber in conference. I think realistically we're a year or two away.

One last comment on the refereeing. Oh, yes, we got homered. The smack in Krslovic's face; the no-call on the goaltending; a critical travelling call that went against us (and earned DeCuire a technical); the ticky-tack fouls to start each half, assuring they'd get to the double-bonus early (where they won the game; we outscored them from the field 54-48.) But I will say one thing in defense of these refs. Montana was up against a much quicker taller more athletic team. And against a team like that you have to fight and scratch and claw, and unfortunately, many of those scratches were called fouls. But we've seen this before with Pac12 refs, certainly at Washington when we had Qvale, (though not at Cal when we almost beat them two years ago.) You have to expect this on the road in college basketball, and overcome it with superior coaching and talent.

I don't think you can assess Wright on last night's game ... seemed to be off from the start. Also, when the refs suddenly start calling a lot of fouls for you at the end of a game like this when you've been shafted, you can be sure they know they've intentionally done it and are covering their asses ... albeit with a very transparent material.
