Montana rules in Spain

Here's a link with a bunch of photos of the guy and a slight write up by the photographer. Still no idea of who he is, but I did notice the Leipheimer on the back of his jersey (also that he was flying the Cali flag, but that could have been becuase he was at the tour of cali).

I also noticed that the maroon colors of the jersey and shorts don't seem to match.

I'm still skeptical but not calling total BS. Funny how none of the bike riders are even looking at him, you think that would draw their attention a little.

interesting point... now, I'm no bike rider, but if I'm in that peloton doing upwards of 60mph, I'm not so sure I want to check that wierd sight in my peripheral vision... and if I do, just for a split second... chances are, I've seen him before anyhow

It looks like the guys on the motorcycles are looking at him out of the corner of their eyes.

Question: How do you get those horns on a plane?

Strange...

The pictures are great on there. I tried to post them on here, but I got an error message:
Your images may only be up to 640 pixels wide.

Some of the quotes on the site are pretty interesting:

i talked to the antler guy and you have to remember the term fan is derived from fanatic!

i'm sure if he isn't on you tube he will be soon because he will be with the race all the way to pasadena.

this guy was an animal. you'll note he was wearing sidis with MTB cleats. you could hear the clack of metal like a steel shod clydesdale as he trotted up and down the hill, never busting a sweat.

the antlered one was warming up before the riders arrived and when they did he ran along with each lone rider, each grupetto offering words of encouragement and water.

all hail antler man!

antler man chases and catches leipheimer and gesink. note the bottles of water in his jersey.

antlerman helps a quickstep rider over the toughest part of the climb.

the race's lantern rouge waves off a bidon from antlerman.

last year the antler guy was the eagle guy. guess he upsized since.

According to this site, the guy's name is Dory Holty, but a quick google search didn't turn up anything new on the guy.

1- Dory Holty aka ‘Antler Dude’ changed up his headwear for Stage 6, opting for an eagle head and wings to top his familiar yellow helmet.

Did you see that dude keep pace with the cyclists for aprox 1 mile while wearing all that crap?
This nutball could be the next Jessie Owens.
What happened to the devil guy or the Lampre fat man?

Does anyone know what the connection is with antler guy and the University of Montana? Saw he was from the left coast somewhere and did similar stunts at other races.

My son, who is a UM grad, and I had a good chuckle during the race when this guy would appear.

His jersey says LEIPHEIMER on the back, like a football jersey. Also it has the number 11 but without the seriffs so it looks more like lower case LL than 11. Leipheimer is from Montana, I hadn't heard Antler Guy was from the east. Hard to believe someone who wants the spotlight so much doesn't have any discoverable web preference.

...just a theory.

A blog with more information about "Antler dude":

I went to the Tour de France yesterday. Our group, 9 in all, headed out from Vitoria-Gasteiz at 5am, drove up into France via Bayonne...

About an hour and a half before the race came along, I hear a LOT of cheering and see this guy sprinting up the road pushing his bike (by now the police had long closed the roads and you could only move on foot) the guy stops RIGHT next to me, and I quickly realize who it is. Yes it was that guy who you have probably seen running next to the peloton with the Football helmet and MASSIVE longhorns, or eagle wings or a huge deer antler rack. He wasn’t running with the helmet quite yet, but was just running up the side of the mountain like a mad man. Anyways we start talking and quickly are joined by another guy from Montana. We three chatted it up for a while and then the Montana guy took off Antlers and flag clearly visible in the background.

Anyways, the Antler dude (His name escapes me, sorry!) is actually from Seattle and had lived for a while on South Whidbey Island, which was quite surprising. We hit it off when he found I was from Seattle and have spent a good amount of time on South Whidbey. We spent the better part of the next hour chatting. It turns out he has been doing this since 2002. He had his massive American flag and helmet with huge deer antlers strapped to the back of his bike. As he started to get ready EVERYONE including the police standing on the side of the road gathered around to check him out. My Spanish friends were like “Scott, we don’t know how it’s done in your country, but this is kind of strange!” Everyone loved it, tons of people lined up to get a picture with him.

Just before the race came by he started to get warmed up by jogging in place and making strange high pitched screeching noises, which attracted the attention of everyone who had not already become fixated on this spectacle. I was just cracking up, he truly was enjoying himself. He had told me that you only live once so its good to go out there on a limb every so often!! When the race came by he took off and started running, for every group that would pass by he would run - Big helmet with huge antler rack and a very large American flag. He said he had another flag, a Lance Armstrong ˜Live Strong” flag, he asked which I thought he should use, that or the Stars and Stripes. I told him that he comes this far he has got to represent the country, so no doubt use the Stars and Stripes.

He said he was going to the start line of today’s stage in Pau to sing the National Anthem “uninvited.” He said he did this a number of years ago back when Lance was still racing. He just walks as close as he can to the start where the rides are waiting to start and just BELTS OUT the national anthem. He said that he was right next to Lance and that lance didn’t acknowledge him, but all the other foreign riders took some interested and treated the anthem as some form of pre-race entertainment.
A quick aside: If you, the Antler/Longhorn guy, happen to read/find my website somehow, I would love to remain intouch with you, please send me an email scootermclean [at] gmail [dot] com and we can get intouch.
As for the race, it was cool seeing the riders go by. It was just about as I had imagined you see them approaching through a massive flotilla of motorcycles, and then they are right there in front of you for 2 seconds, and then you watch them ride off into an uncertain future. Some riders looked to be in a lot of pain, others looked very calm and collect. Thomas Dekker of Rabobank was laughing.

Certainly, an odd duck...

Montana's Leipheimer wins Tour of California

Associated Press - February 23, 2009 10:24 AM ET

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) - Montana's Levi Leipheimer has won his third straight Tour of California bicycle race.

Leipheimer finished the 9-day race yesterday, after taking the lead last Monday and never giving it up. He finished with an overall time of 31 hours, 28 minutes, 21 seconds.

7-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong supported Leipheimer as a teammate.

For the first time, the Tour of California visited San Diego County.

The 96.8-mile final stage from Rancho Bernardo to Escondido featured a ride up snowcapped Palomar Mountain, where the cyclists reached the 5,123-foot level on a two-lane highway with 21 switchbacks. Near the top, dozens of spectators tried to run alongside the cyclists. Those spectators included a man who wore a University of Montana jersey, and a football helmet decorated with antlers.

Leipheimer grew up in the Montana city of Butte.

Antler Man made news across the country...

I'm at a loss for words. Gesink and Leipheimer manage to ride away from everyone save for a football playing elk from Montana in bike shoes.

Hours before competitors began the race in Rancho Bernardo, riders on Palomar Mountain were stopping to meet and greet Dore Holte, "The Antler Man," as he made preparations to carry out his normal race course antics.

Holte is a popular character on the tour and has become somewhat of a cult hero to the cycling community and law enforcement. One CHP officer stopped to get his picture taken with Holte, who can often be seen in race footage running alongside riders with a various assortment of antlers attached to a helmet he wears.

For this race, it was a rack from what Holte labeled a "Ragin' Rocky Mountain elk."

"This set of antlers is in honor of Levi, because he's from Montana," said Holte as he put on the helmet with the massive fake horns.

"My favorite rider used to be Lance and I used to wear these big old longhorns, but when Lance retired a few years ago, I starting liking Levi a lot more. That's why I wear these antlers now."

Apparently, Dore Holte has stated that he is from Clinton, Washington, which is on Whidby Island, and also Seattle.

LOL, I was hoping someone would post that!! They showed a clip of him and the "fat man" suit on the news the other night. Thanks, Bud

Watch out for him. Obviously, he is a ladies man.

I hear that he is horny...

I think that we should have him lead the Griz out of the tunnel before the Homecoming game.

Can anybody with good photoshop skills come up with a picture of that?

Feb. 18: Dore Holte of Seattle wears a set of antlers as he paces the lead of American rider Danny Pate during the first stage of the 2008 Amgen Tour of California.

Apparently, he has no connection to Montana, or the University of Montana. He is now a fan of Levi Leipheimer, so he wears a Montana jersey that happens to be a Griz jersey. I guess the fake antlers are supposed to be indicative of Montana.

He used to wear longhorns and a Texas jersey when he was a fan of Lance.

The "ll" on the back of his jersey are likely lower case "L"'s for Levi Leipheimer. The guy is definitely different, and he certainly likes attention. He gets interviews from all over the world at these events.

I still can't figure how he gets those things on a plane. Maybe they are collapsible.

Here is a blog about him from a non-fan:

Ask and ye shall have. I have the doctored photo -- web (72 dpi) resolution as well as 300 dpi -- but I'm not signed up for a photo-upload site. My old one went belly-up and I haven't bothered to find another. A quick Google turned up only fee-based sites.

Suggestions?
