Next year, when Jacob Anderson joins Oregon State and Reed Harris goes east to Boston College, there will be FOUR Montana-born players on P5 rosters, when you include Buschini and Sulser.

When was the last time (if ever?) that that happened….

Don't know, but back in the day, my junior year team at Bozeman high sent players to Colorado, Wyoming, 2 to Wa St, Alabama, and Dartmouth. 5 of the players played 4 years and were starters. One was an all-American and one played in the NFL. Four were on what is now P5 teams and one was on a top 20 team.

Came real close in the 90’s

Shane Collins - ASU 88-91

Cory Huot - Oregon State 90-94
Tony Huot - Oregon State 92-95
Mark Gilman - Nebraska 91-95

Ryan Leaf - WSU 1995-1997

Montana has always had excellent athletes and not only in football that played in top FBS conferences. Don’t forget Dave McNally who went directly to the majors as a great left handed pitcher for Baltimore.

I realize that, I just don’t recall a time in the past 25-30 years where we’ve had FOUR P5 football athletes at the same time. Wondering if that’s going to become more of a trend as Montana football ramps up it’s level of competitiveness….

And one could maaaaaaybe count the Sirmon kid who played for Sentinel…but he’s really just a rental. :D

The kid at BYU from Sentinel is still at BYU but he’s serving a 2 year LDS mission

Pete Lazetich-Stanford

I talked to Pete today. He had just finished bailing hay on his little ranch outside Reno. Said his son runs the bail bond business now. Pete seemed good. He has the largest personality of anyone I ever met in my life. Great guy.

Wonderful family of great athletes!

My dad and Pete's dad were good friends with each other at UM in the late 30s. My dad would go with Pete's dad to the ranch in Anaconda on holidays, when there wasn't time to get back to our family's ranch in northeastern MT.

The answer is 2001:

Greg Carothers - Washington (Helena Capital)
Dwan Edwards - Oregon State (Columbus)
Mark Anderson - Stanford (Lewistown)
Matt Kegel - Washington State (Havre)
Pat Ryan - Notre Dame (Billings West)
Travis Dorsch - Purdue (Bozeman)

Very good. I recall all of them, but didn't know their years. A talented bunch. Thx.

We knew Pete’s Mom and Dad as church members. Also Pete’s sister. When we talk about Montana born football players, the Lazetich family would be among the greatest.

His sister Karen was a year or two younger than we were. Didn't Pete's dad, Bill, and his brother, also a Griz, play in the NFL? Certainly, his brother did. Pete was a first team all-state point guard in basketball too. I defended him in several games. Completely shut him down. Oh, maybe not.
