The Pac had contacted the ACC a year ago. I’m sure Stanford started that. Stanford will go very quickly to the B1G if asked. BTW, the news as of tonight is that the ACC gave Stanford & Cal a rather chilly reception, and that was probably to be expected, and I think Stanford knew that. I think Stanford whispers sweet nothings to Duke (and perhaps Wake Forest) about a backup plan they have.
The next step is to talk to the American. I don’t think the numbers work out for that, but there’s talk that half the current schools are interested. That could temporarily stave off the death of the Pac per se, but I doubt the networks increase the $6M per year payout the American currently guess. But I think Rice, SMU, and maybe Tulane also get whispers about Stanford’s backup plan. Think you can guess that this backup would be an FBS Ivy League. And since Notre Dame reportedly heavily went to bat for Stanford at the ACC presentation, one wonders if…
…eh, I’m pushing that a little hard.
Bottom line, Stanford is different. Cal pretty much is, too. These schools aren’t hurting for applicants in any event.

When the MWC formed, they got $7M per school per year. Now it’s $4M. That story rings true across most of the G5. And while we know that the b12 backfilled with AAC schools, and we know James Madison made the move, then the verdict came in. Networks gave the big money to the B1G and SEC, they’ve now killed a P5, and this has done nothing to stem cord-cutting. The industry as a whole is hurting. The Pac, already damaged by the previous commissioner, whose mismanagement masked an unmanageable membership, thought they’d wait out a network dry spell, but CRASH. Meanwhile, the networks paid more to kill the Pac than to save it… they are cannibalizing college football. They basically told the b12 not to add more G5 schools (though their commissioner still used UConn and Gonzaga as threats to induce action from others). When only 2-3 conferences are getting paid to expand, don’t expect any interest in either Montana school, because nobody will pay for you to move. Maybe that changes in 3 years, but, eh, shrug.
