Montana HS recruit

Greetings from a Utah State Aggie fan.

On our message board, we've recently heard rumors about a HS player by the last name of Selvig. Can anyone tell me a bit about Selvig and what colleges are looking at him (and what school/schools he is interested in)?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Derek Selvig, junior from Glendive, at least 6'8", top college prospect in the state. Dad is the coach, and was great player for Montana. Uncle is long-time coach of women's hoops team at Montana. I think I got the relationships right, but if not someone will correct it. Note that Gonzaga's star player, Morrison, was born in Glendive, when his dad was coaching there, and his parents were both from northeastern Montana, as is the Selvig family.

Derek Selivig is a 6-10 player projected to be four position player in college (pg, 2g, sf, pf). Like mentioned before his dad (Doug)played for the Griz when Morril was an assistant coach at Montana and I am told are still very good friends. Derek is currently coached by his dad at Glendive. I have talked with a lot of college coaches (D-1, D-2 and NAIA) and for the last couple of years I have heard what an outstanding Basketball player he is going to be. While I have not seen him play in person though so far the last two years his stats have been less than noteworthy. Last year he missed most of the year with a foot/ankle injury, and barely made an impact on his team. This year his stats are pretty non-descript for all the hype he is getting. At 6-10 junior, a deadeye shooter, ball handler and post up guy playing at the A level I really would by now expecting him to dominate, and he really is not. He even has the advantage of playing on a team that has "true" post players so he can play the wing (not always the case here in Montana). I have been "watching" him pretty closely the last two or so years and I can only remember one time where it appeared he has dominated a game. Don't get me wrong, every thing I hear and continue to hear from people who are far more qualified than I tell me he is that he is the real deal, but with out being able to actually see him play (Glendive is 400 plus miles from Missoula) you tend to get all your info from newspapers.

BTW Morril is also looking at 6-7 Bobby Howard from Great Falls. At the AA level he is averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds (or so) a game. That though is another topic.

BTW I would love to hear from any one from the eastern part of the state who could tell me what they think of Derek. :twocents:

I have watched him throughout his high school career to this point. Has some potential but is spotty. I would still have a wait and see attitude. Hasn't played a true post despite his size. He plays a lot on the wing. Hasn't really shown that he can carry a class A school on his back yet, but, that may have more to do with there are some pretty good athletes around him so that hasn't been necessary. I would say that next year will be a real litmus test for him. Glendive will be graduating much of their talent. Selvig will then be the main focus.

Word on the USU board is that Stew is recruiting him to be an Aggie.

Bobby Knight stopped in to see him during his annual hunting trip to Eastern Montana. I think there are several who are looking at him.

He has been hurting but not enough to miss playing time. Bob Knight looking at ball players in the area is nothing new. He has regularly hunted in eastern Montana for years. (Not entirely without mishap according to the rumor mill.) I'm sure Selvig will peak a lot of interest because of his size. He is still a junior though so a lot can happen between now and signing day.

I know they were looking at him last Fall.
I'll get the latest this weekend.
Will be at the game in Logan and can ask the man himself.
Go Aggies!!
