Montana HS basketball Trivia

Damn... If memory serves me correct, Kenney was the guy that was involved in the classic Shann Ferch barrage fest in I believe 1985/'86...? If that is the same individual I remember he was one hell of a strong player.

I thought the issue was whether, as colsteveaustin implied, there were a couple kids from Butte in the mid- to late 80's who played basketball for WAC programs.

Not quite. I simply stated that I recall a couple of individuals from there who went to WAC teams and apparently did not pan out as I heard nothing about them from that point on.

I made a quick call to my brother who is more familiar with that time and he tells me that Rasmussen is indeed correct regarding BYU. The other was a guy named Tom Kenney (sp?) out of Butte Central who was signed by Colorado State - or so he thinks. He has no idea what happened with him there.

I thought Kennedy played football in college!?

something i've wondered: does montana produce better female basketball players than male? after all, robin selvig has built a stellar progam around montana recruits (something that would be unheard of on the male side) and if he'd been able to keep several of the players that got away--deden, payne, lallum, hays, harris among others--he might have made it to the sweet 16 on a couple of occasions. and of course, montana has produced some of its best talent only recently, what with morales, conway, guardipee, rogers and closson playing now for the lady griz, heringer a rising star for montana state, and the youngsters hurley and tinkle coming up through the high school ranks.

one obvious difference is that robin has successfully tapped into the great native american talent that exists in montana. i can't help but look at a list that includes pretty weasel, takes enemy, old bull and yelloweyes and wonder what they all might have contributed to the men's program.

Ahh... very well could be the case, Cat. I definitely do remember him now, however. A really ungainly looking guy on the court but he could light it up.

i know there was a center that played on the 2004 state runner up team that did some damage. about 6'5, now a oredigger and warming the bench

Hells Bells you are talking about Casey Briggs, but he doesn't warm the bench he plays alot and will probably start this coming season. Also, Tony Trudnowski from the 04 runner up plays on the team, but doesn't see much playing time.

Citygriz....you have brought up a very important point....to recruit, nurture, retain for 4 years the best Indian basketball players would be a wonderful contribution to our already successful program at UM. Players like Larry Prettyweasel played at a level that most players can only dream about.

The 1991-92 LG could have made it to the 'Elite Eight' IF all were healthy & without injury. After beating Wisconsin on the road in Madison, the LG lost to USC with Leslie taking over after Shannon went out plus going to the free throw line to finish up the game. Without injuries the game with USC could have easiy have had a different outcome.
USC subsequently defeated S. F. Austin in the Regionals before losing to Stanford in the Regional Championship. Stanford the eventual NCAA Champion for that year.

Spanky,

FYI, you may already know this, but you referred to the article that was in SI a few years back. The guy who wrote that article has it published with a collection of some of his other SI articles of the years. That was a very good article he wrote on takes enemy, and also had some mentions of old bull. Title was, Shadow of a Nation. It was good to re-read, thought it might be of interest to you., Anyways the book that its in is:

Beyond the Game: The Collected Sportswriting of Gary Smith

I mentioned the article and happened to be at the game at Rocky Mtn College when SI was doing the photo shoot of Takes Enemy for the magazine article.

grizfnz, maybe you can answer this question. I have often wondered what happened to takes enemy, did he end up staying at rocky for more than a year. Doesn't seem to be much info around the web that I could find, basically all I could find is he was at rocky for a year, then was gone, and couldn't find anything about him after that.
