Montana HS basketball Trivia

Does anyone remember a Brent Wilson from Kalispell & a Ken Larsen from Cut Bank back in the sixties? I was just wondering which college they may have gone to. Both were listed at 6'10" I believe.

For 1b. there was an Angie Thill from Belt that played four years in the late nineties for the Univ. of Utah; Andrea Lalum from Bozeman along with Lori Payne from Havre ( I believe she spent her first year at Livingston if not mistaken), she's now an assistant coach at Pepperdine INM.

A team mate of Shannon's at Billings Central that went on to Notre Dame switched sports after a knee injury & won a medal in the last Olympiad in scull racing INM. Jenny Trenneil (sp) I believe.

Karen Deden was MVP of one of the four NCAA Regionals her senior year.

Probably the most outstanding basketball player that Montana has ever seen was Larry Prettyweasel from Hardin.

I've heard stories of the legend, too bad they didn't have video then. Larry's relative (nephew or great nephew) Jonathan TakesEnemy could certainly hold his own and was featured in a 1991 issue of SI.

how about george yellow eyes. played for the state industrial school. a phenomonal outside shooter. probably would have averaged forty if there'd been a three-point line then. my grandfather told me about him.

Very few indeed... I do recall that a couple of guys from Butte went to WAC teams in the mid-80's. Apparently they flamed as I never heard much about them afterwards. The Mining City crew will undoubtedly know who I am talking about here.

I still haven't seen anyone in MT who could touch Takes Enemy. For that matter, very few here in the BB rich Seattle area. He was truly one who could compete at any level in any era.

Takes Enemy was a wonderful player....Prettyweasel can only be described as other worldly. I saw them both play and I've not seen anyone as good as Larry Prettyweasel at any level. His father and uncle were also excellent players when they had an all Indian team that was on tour. It would be good if Larry could be used as an adviser to some of our more outstanding high school players when they are very young. Otherwise his wisdom of the game will one day be lost.

Spanky, you must have been pretty young to have seen Prettyweasel play. I remember my dad talking about him when I was a little kid.

Then in about '65 or '66 I ran into a guy on the street in Missoula who said he was Larry Prettyweasel and he asked why they wouldn't let him play bball in the Men's Gym on campus. I was wearing a UM sweatshirt and I figured that's why he stopped me to ask. I've always wondered if that's who he really was. He looked to be in his mid-twenties or a little older which should've been about the right age.

some butte b.ballers i remmeber

1) gary kane. what a shooter! played for the griz in the early 90s if i am not correct.
2) bob olson. for what its worth a great shooter but lazy player. i have always thought he would be a good player if he got his head out of his a@@

94-2003 (?)

these are called the dark years

i know there was a center that played on the 2004 state runner up team that did some damage. about 6'5, now a oredigger warming the bench

2005-2006-2007
of course we have edwards

anywhere to about 1992 i was two young to remember

You're mistaken, colsteveaustin. No one from Butte went to WAC programs. I remember the early, mid-, and late 80's Butte High and Butte Central teams very well. None of the guys from the state AA championship '84 Butte High team played college ball anywhere. Coach Foley's squads did pretty well in the 80's, ending with the 1989 team that lost to Flathead in the state championship game (Gary Kane from that Butte team played for the Griz).

Takes Enemy was great, but not as good as Elvis Old Bull. Hardin and Lodge Grass have produced some good Indian players (as good as the 1980 Browning championshp squad with Floyd Cross Guns?). For my money, since we're talking 80's-era players (Takes Enemy, Old Bull, etc.), I'd pick a Scott Zanon (Flathead and later Grizzlies) or a Scott Hurley (Anaconda and later flunked out at MSU before transferring to tiny Division II Wayne State Nebraska) in a New York second over Takes Enemy.

Gary X Guns was known to bounce the ball off his forehead for a bucket a time or two. Mostly in pick-up games, but I remember seeing him do it once in a regulation game. He was high percentage with it. :dope:

GriznWyo......Yes, Spanky was young then, Larry was and is a good friend of mine. I will ask him about the gym story that you related as we visit two or three times a year.

Sorry there was ! I am tring to place the kids name but I believe it was something like Rasmuson. He was a 6-8 center /forward. Stew Starner really liked him. He was signed out of Butte in the mid to late 80's by BYU. As a member of the LDS church I believe BYU was a no brainer for him he commited before his junior year in highschool. He red shirted his freshman year and then the next year went on a mission. I do not believed he played basketball again.

Spanky, it' ll be interesting to hear what he says. I' ve thought about it many times over the years, wondering if I' d really talked to the legendary Larry Prettyweasel.

Thanks.

Oh my. I thought the issue was whether, as colsteveaustin implied, there were a couple kids from Butte in the mid- to late 80's who played basketball for WAC programs. My point was no one from Butte teams in the 80's played WAC basketball. Mslacat, if your info is correct, you confirmed my point. If there was a Mormon kid from Butte who supposedly spent a redshirt year at BYU and then went on a mission, never to return, and never to play a single game of WAC basketball, I won't dispute you. I don't think our points are inconsistent.

Langum?
Payne?
Mandi Carver - ISU, very good career
Jennifer Clary - Idaho, former Shelby Coyote, werd!
Heidi Harris
Karen Deden

All the one's I remember.
Don't remember any guys. Shann Ferch is the closest I can think of, but he played a year or 2 at MSU first, I think

How could I have forgotten about the MVP of the BSC (2000-01) when she was a junior & the all-time conference rebounder as well when she played for Idaho St out of Dillon. Still holds that record if not mistaken. Also good in the hurdles when in HS, like Jesse Linford was. Would be a nice addition to the LG if Jesse has similar career accomplishments.

Andrea Kiesling from Helena went to San Diego St (from 1999-02) & Northern Colorado has a couple Montana kids as well; one from Sidney & the other from Missoula Sentinel. Danielle Hagan (6'1" post) & Alisa Christopherson (5'11" F) respectively.

Not quite. I simply stated that I recall a couple of individuals from there who went to WAC teams and apparently did not pan out as I heard nothing about them from that point on.

I made a quick call to my brother who is more familiar with that time and he tells me that Rasmussen is indeed correct regarding BYU. The other was a guy named Tom Kenney (sp?) out of Butte Central who was signed by Colorado State - or so he thinks. He has no idea what happened with him there.
