Montana high school potential

Just curious as to see who everyone thinks could eventually contribute to the griz from montana. There could be some longshots out there, criswell was a walkon remember! Obviously Brock Oshweiller from Kalispell, but what about the rest of the state?

6-foot-10 Derek Selvig of Glendive. Good pedigree and likely to have strong loyalty to UM.

I saw an amazing game Friday between Whitehall and Three Forks. Three Forks started with a 24-0 run to open the game. Then Whitehall made a comeback, and ended up winning the game by 9 points, even though Three Forks was a much taller team. Whitehall's guard, Layne Glaus, basically carried his team on his shoulders. Scored 40 points, out of 65 total, was 17-17 from the line, 5 of 9 three pointers, i believe. he's probably a little under 6 feet tall, excellent ballhandler, and he can pass when he gets double teamed. When they gave him a little space outside, he'd bomb it in, and when they didn't he'd run the defender and pop in a short jumper in the key, with soft touch. This is the first high school game i've seen in years, so it is hard for me to say how he stacks up. He's definitely college material--saw the Carroll coach there scouting him--but he may not quite have the size, etc, to play for D-1 team like the griz. but just thought i'd mention him because i'd never really heard of the guy, and his game was amazing.

A few weeks ago I would have never said we would have a chance at GFH's 6'6" Bobby Howard because of his connections to the Cats. But while surfing last week I saw a few Cat fans said that Howard is not a lock to go to the Cats. I also saw him at the Griz - Sac State game two weeks ago.

Also 6'10" Edwards of Butte is playing well but we will see how he does down the stretch.

I agree Selvig and Osweiler are Griz potential players as well.

Boy it would be a coup to get Selvig and Howard in 2007.

The senior class of 2006 does not have any premiere players this year but they have some that could walk on and maybe develop.
Paul Morris of Big sky could be one of them.

Just my opinion.

Morris isn't the player he is made out to be. I've seen him play three times this year and wasn't impressed. He was shut down by Jeff Shaffer of Hellgate and relied on his teamates to win games for them. He is a good athlete but i personally don't think he could play D1, possible JC player.

Some players i think could play for D1 schools are Oswieler (sp?) i missed any games with butte so i can't talk about them. Also the kid from Senior with the rosey cheeks could play D1 ball. he can shoot and pass, an all around player.

The kid from senior is actually from west and his name is Brett Taylor, and as for Edwards whether he plays college ball or not, I would have to consider him a major disapointment for how big he is. It is obvious that he is not an extremely dedicated player and that is too bad based on the size he is blessed with.

Maybe Andy Garland could play D-1 ball, only a sophomore but still put up 36 against Big Sky on saturday. What does anybody else think of him?

Although I agree that Taylor is an excellent player, I do not think he will play DI basketball. He has a lot of skill, but he is only 5'7". Being a Billings West alum, I hope he goes DI, but I don't think it's going to happen.

I dont know hard to say, he doesn't necessarilly look like he has college athletic ability, yet he is tearing it up in the high-school ranks. Three years a lot of time for imporvment though.

Morris has been offered a preferred walk-on spot for football for UM. I don't know what he will end up doing.

If he chooses basketball, I am not sure he is D1 material. But then I never thought Jack McGillis would be starting for OSU either.

i don't really follow high school b-ball closely, but read in GF trib today a story on the heart butte/lodgepole game for championship in a class c divisional. they mentioned a 6-10 kid named brave rock who had 20 or so points, and a freshman named long soldier who had 25. anyone know if they have any college potential?

1' 2" Reese Wahlberg future high school TBD, he's got some raw talent that could make him a multi-sport player.

He could already dunk on Bryan Ellis.

I actually broadcasted the Northern C divisional championship game between these two players and it was a pretty good game. As far as collegiate potential Longsoldier, the 6'4" Freshman has it and Brave Rock, the 6'10" guy doesn't. Brave Rock is a bean pole and he gets pushed around way to easy. He doesn't have the physical make up to play on the inside and he doesn't finish very well at all. He scored a bunch of points in the first half of that championship game but all of them came on turn around jumpers where nobody was able to get a hand in his face because he had 6 inches on everybody he played. He's not a consitent enough shot so probably forget him ever playing college ball. Longsoldier on the other hand I was greatly impressed by. This kid has a great physical make up including a decent frame with room to grow. But what amazed me physically about him was his long arms. They are very long and he uses them well in all aspects of the game whether it be shooting, rebounding, or defense. He is exceptionally smooth through the air and he made countless leaners and floaters over Brave Rock in that championship game. He was very impressive and in two or three years I think he could be a solid D-I prospect. Another kid that I came away impressed with and probably won't here much about although I think he could play at the Big Sky level is Brian Davison. He's a 6'3" junior for Highwood but he is still growing. He has room to fill out physically which he'll need to do in order to play at a D-I level but other than that he is well rounded with very few holes in his game. He has a silky smooth jumpshot that he uses well, he can handle the ball well enough to play the point, he rebounds, and he defends. But most importantly this kid showed great smarts on the basketball floor as well as a desire to be a team leader and that impressed me just as much as his skill did. But yeah I hope that answers your question about them and I threw in Davison because I believe he at least deserves a look.

Thanks for the insights. Be interesting to watch Long Soldier the next couple years. Imagine he'll grow beyond his 6-4 too.

I also mentioned Layne Glaus of Whitehall earlier here, and I see last night he had 28 points in Whitehall's OT win over Big Timber in a B challenge game. Most likely he's Frontier Conference material, but who knows?
