Thanks for the info. I wonder why Butte Central is still Class "A," though; there's at least 33 Class "B" schools that have larger enrollments. A couple Class "C" schools as well.

Someone heard from a good source we will have the best player from every Montana High School play for the GRIZ next football season.

It's sad to see the enrollment numbers for rural Highline and Eastern Montana high schools continue to decline. The populations of many of many of these communities are decreasing and/or getting older. Many of these communities are based around their schools and its likely that many of them will go the way of the Kremlins and Rudyards and be shutdown.

As a private school, I think Butte Central can petition to play up a class. They were historically Class A and have remained there and they seem to compete fairly well, in football at least.

Same thing happens in South Dakota to some extent. The private schools are allowed to play either where their enrollment puts them or up one class. Some play at their enrollment class and steamroll the competition (St. Thomas More in Rapid City...the accusation of recruiting comes up often) and others play up and are still title contenders in many sports (Sioux Falls O'Gorman).

It is pretty sad. The enrollment of the combined Chester-Joplin-Inverness is lower than when I went to the "old" Chester High, which wasn't THAT long ago. We were one of the biggest Class C schools then. Now CJI is slipping toward the middle of the pack. And Joplin and Inverness are damn near ghost towns now. Not that they were thriving cities before, but the schools closing certainly didn't help.

You could COMBINE Sentinel and Big Sky and STILL not hit the enrollment we had JUST at Sentinel in my day. It's no wonder we can't compete with The Billings Wests of the state any more... :| :| :| :|

Actually, Butte Central doesn't have to petition to stay Class A. MHSA does not make schools drop down, they only MAKE schools go up. Glendive and Dillon are coming very close to the enrollment number for Class B, but as long as the sports programs are strong, they would never go down. Belgrade, Whitefish and Columbia Falls have flirted with AA enrollment in recent years. Ronan just dropped to Class B this past season, and I was told it was a year of very heated debate. Many people did not want to go down and I heard there was some pretty intense school board meetings during that process.

For one thing, knowing where football is still being played on a high school level:..a number of players have come out of some of the smaller schools. For instance Pat Foster, DE, 1984-87, Savage (Class "C"), drafted by the L.A. Rams in 1988. Chase Reynolds out of Drummond. Dan Beaudin, 2006-09, out of Class "C" Noxon. Spencer Frederick, 1998-01, out of Scobey. Steve Pfahler, 2006-08, out of now Class "A" Frenchtown. Ron Rosenberg, 1971-74, Whitefish, etc., etc., etc.

The dynamics have changed somewhat since when I grew up, what with the Big 32.
