Montana high school coaching legend passes away

My condolences to Coach Cheek's family and friends. Good man, whose contributions to Montana's youth are immeasurable.

Some time ago, a friend told me a story about Coach Cheek. The story was 2nd/3rd hand, and some embellishment may have occurred.

A friend graduated in Education and was placed as student teacher at Anaconda physical education under John Cheek. This guy was a strong, athletic man but also had significantly above-average girth. Reportedly, Coach Cheek required all the guys/students to do a hand-stand push-up (among other requirements) in order to receive a passing P.E. grade. Coach Cheek told his student teacher (partially serious, but probably joking) that the hand-stand push-up requirement applied to him also. The student teacher did a hand-stand near the wall, but his significant weight caused his arms to buckle and he collapsed. No lasting injury resulted, but Coach Cheek laughed at the early-20s student teacher when he regained consciousness.

Didn't like him much as my PE teacher (the man was a slave-driver), but from what I understand, not a bad guy at all.

RIP.
