Colter: what adjustments are UM coaches making to help the Griz defense ?

Eastern Washington ran 96 plays, including 50 after halftime. Gubrud ended up with 549 passing yards, the most in EWU’s rich passing history. Nic Sblendorio caught 18 passes while Nsimba Webster added 13 receptions.
“When people run tempo that fast, you can’t get calls in the game,” UM second-year defensive coordinator Jason Semore said last week. “In the first half, I was able to help them by calling Cover 2 and stuff like that to make it a hard perimeter. They figured out what our tempo defense was and got us caught in it in the second half.
“I have to do a better job of changing what our tempo check is. Even when we didn’t have the right call, we tackled it for a five-yard gain in the first half because we weren’t dead. It was a combination of guys being gassed and them having a good scheme of getting me into checks instead of getting to call the defense.”
Those lack of adjustments and checks could be seen by Stitt, who almost exclusively runs Montana’s offense, leaving the defensive game planning and game calling up to Semore.
“You let your guys coach and you go with the game plan,” Stitt said. “It’s something you let your guys coach. We can’t give up 42 points in the second half. That’s the bottom line. I’ve never been a part of anything like that. You obviously have to get better. You have to make some adjustments to make them do some other things. It’s on me and we have to do better and we have to help our kids be successful.”
The EWU tempo had a striking effect on Montana. On Sam McPherson’s 50-yard catch and run to tie the game at 27 late in the third quarter, Montana linebackers Connor Strahm and Josh Buss could essentially only muster a job.
“It’s not an excuse because that’s part of the game, but fatigue was a factor,” UM safeties coach Shann Schillinger said. “Late in the third quarter and in the fourth quarter, our guys got tired. Credit to them for getting us in that situation. At that point in time, you can see the fundamentals lack. We couldn’t get off blocks as good, we couldn’t tackle as good. Those are things that happen when you are tired. We can’t let fatigue get to us again. We have to fight through it. That’s part of the game. It’s not an excuse, it’s a reality.”

They switched out "young players is why" with "Got tired is why" the defense gets gashed for 500 yards

maybe they got tired because they're young?

So basically Ewu did to the Montana defense exactly what Stitt wants to do to opposing defenses.

solid article colter and truthful.....stitt can say it his fault (it is because he is the head coach), but semore saying we "got caught" having to make checks, is lack pf preparation...give your senior leader, strong, that authority if the speed of the offense is too much for your game plan,,,,geez,,,,im not even going to go to missed assignments, tackling etc. because of fatigue...i guess i just did....yes we will probably learn form this and we will get better, but now is the time to see it in the box score and final score, mr semore.

Yeah his statements just prove he is way over his head

I hope we see responsibility weaned away from him in a similar fashion to the last guy we had at DC. That gave me a lot of faith in Stitt as a HC. Would help his case if he plans to win some games this year for sure.

A little ball control couldn't hurt, to keep the defense off the field longer. This could be the week where we run the ball well, which will set up the pass, and give the defense more time to rest. Wouldn't mind seeing us run fewer plays, if it means keeping ball out of ISU's hands.

I’m convinced that it doesn’t matter. Even early in games, when our defense isn’t gassed, we still get ran down the field.

We officially have to score 50+ to win now.

There's a big difference between getting beat schematically and getting beat from being gassed. Did you complain when EWU only put up 6 in the 1st half?

Exactly, I've been saying this for weeks. So, it works, huh? Defense will be on the field more with this offense. We just need to learn that this is the case. I think schematically things need tightened up, execution needs improvement, and perhaps they are closer then we think.

So EWU was better prepared physically? I kinda/sorta buy that. I doubt we were gassed for the entire 42-point tirade that they swiftly blew up our ass. Maybe the end of the 4th....but by then we had already given them the game back.

Semore said couldn't get calls he wanted so had to go eith checks too often.....that is being outcoached not being ready/adjusting

So they can't improve this year, because they didn't last year? I'm hoping there's growth as the year goes on. Probably over-optimistic, but I'm gonna keep on thinking it.

I personally know a player on the defense and he said they were running plays faster than our offense runs them and it caught the coaches and players off guard he said it was not just the coaches fault when they did get the play in the players were not lining up into formation fast enough

I think getting rid of that weird pass rush package would be a big help. We give up way to many yards and big plays trying to pressure the QB in that formation. (Especially on third down)... " "Just saying"...
Go Griz!
