Montana: Cost of Attendance Scholarships Discussion

Can someone fill us in on the Washington Grizzly Stadium food concession income? I understood a few years ago that that money didn't even go to athletics. Why would concession income be any different than ticket income? It is football generated income! :?

Private funding would cover that no problem. Set up a website like ndsu and the $$ will roll in if it means getting good recruits and staying competitive. I'd give $$ to that.

This. This will probably be the model UM/MSU will have to adopt. Rest assured, with the general cost of attendance for all students (i.e. Tuition) constantly on the rise, the student body at large won't go for athletic fee increases.

Email that I got from Kent Haslam was that they estimate U of M's Cost of Attendance at $3,600 with 178.1 athletic scholarships so right now U of M's estimated cost is just over $641K.

The cost of attendance should be applied ONLY to revenue producing sports. As these programs already create scholarship revenue for the Title IX & Olympic sports on every campus in america. It's just like a sales organization. The people who generate the most money should be allowed to KEEP the most money!

Except that would violate Title IX because then only football (and possibly men's basketball) would receive benefits.

I believe the Lady GRIZ basketball program generates revenue.

With Title IX issues, etc I don't think there's any way that the University couldn't offer this to all of the student athletes, or none.

Given enrollment/budget issues we are in a tough place....not supporting whole costs will hurt recruiting but I don't think UM is in a position to make it happen.

Nothing short of a big bump in enrollment will make it happen...an expensive proposition if even that would be enough!

UM as a flagship liberal arts university is not in the same position as MSU, a STEM focused school. But it appears they are not going to move on it.

Agreed. Donations will more than cover that additional cost. Dropping to D2 would mark the beginning of the end, so guess what? COA is non-optional for 2016 class.
Given the Griz currently have one of the highest, if not the highest football ticket prices in FCS football, it would be an absolute travesty not to do this! I have no problem with remaining FCS for the near future, but to not strive to remain as competitive as possible in at least football, men's hoops and women's hoops would be a huge mistake and ultimately cost the athletic department far more than offering Cost of Attendance Scholarships.

Allocating all the profits from in stadium beer sales could pay for a bunch of the costs. Talked to a buddy in the casino business and on beer a $5 glass should net close to $3.50 to $4 in profit. You do the math if you assume 1/3 of the fans would drink 2 beers per game. Comes out to around $70K per game. Not saying it would pay for all of it but we might need to be creative. MSU is the one that brought up ending letting people back in after halftime to curb the binge drinking and adding in stadium beer sales.

That won't work Papa Bear. UM is not a business.
Are you serious?

a : a usually commercial or mercantile activity engaged in as a means of livelihood : trade, line <in the restaurant business>
b : a commercial or sometimes an industrial enterprise; also : such enterprises <the business district>
c : dealings or transactions especially of an economic nature : patronage <took their business elsewhere>

Institutions of higher learning ARE big business!

There might even be an easier solution since the GSA already sells beer in the tailgate - just sell a special cup with the funds from cup sales earmarked for cost of attendance. Knock a buck or 2 off the cost of refills using the cup.

This Missoulian article on the subject notes that Northern Iowa offers cost of attendance stipends only for men and women's basketball and volleyball. Maybe (as a phase-in, until all sports can be covered) the Grizz could offer COA for football, men and women's basketball, and one other women's sport that faces the most competitive recruiting. Keep the sports that generate the most excitement and publicity for the University of Montana highly competitive, and all other sports programs will benefit! (Many have noted how much the football win over NDSU benefited the entire university.)

This is gonna turn into once again another process big brother has to drag little retarded brother through, which will ultimatley delay the process for UM. Wasting our valuable time. Just like any other move up convo. I can see it coming now. COA is not even an issue, its what it will take to field a college football program for the rest of our lives.
