Momentum Killers

In the NDSU game the Griz had two huge momentum killers.
First one was when O'Connell got the fumble recovery yet Hauck got a holding call.

The next one was in the socond half when NDSU was pinned deep and Hauck nailed for a lit hit (Graves got called for it).

You can see the defense just hang their heads after each of these two calls.

I will say this one thing though. I counted 7 times that it showed on the game where there were blatant holds by NDSU and the refs did nothing. The one time that was more than obvious was on one of the long runs an NDSU player was holding Welnel. The NDSU player had his left hand on front of Welenel's jersey and his right hand on the back of his jersey.

And do not get me started about when Johnson went down. Blatant face mask and his butt touches the ground before he fumled but YET it is reviewed and called a fumble.

These would not have changed the outcome of the game but they would have made the game more interesting.

I did like the 3-3-5 defense until this game when everyone packed the box on the two long explosive runs that NDSU had. No assignment football and that should have been R. Hauck that was in the back field and not one trying to get the next tackle.

I posted a picture in another thread where the ball is out and you can see nothing is down. Not his butt, nor his elbow or knees. They absolutely missed the facemask, but he wasn't down.

Agree with the rest of your post, though, although we also held them a lot and it wasn't called.

Face mask was obvious and not called. Hard to understand why it was missed. I thought QBs were supposed to get extra protection?

Yeah, and unfortunately they can't retroactively assess a penalty that wasn't called on the play. We got screwed there, but unfortunately for us he wasn't down.

If leagues are going to puss out and use replay (I fucking hate it, in ANY sport), then if a play is reviewed, EVERYTHING should be on the table. Not just what was called, but what was MISSED as well. Otherwise, you’re mostly just putting lipstick on a pig as far as the reffing goes.

Stupid playcall. A minute to go in the half and you're back in game. Run the clock out and take all of the momentum into the locker room. Get the ball to start the second half and take control. Lots of stupid coaching decisions this year but this one was near the top.

Let’s be honest here: the way NDSU was running the ball, if we’d just run into the LOS and then punted they’d have scored in 2 plays anyways. :lol:

They responded and took control, and our weak ass approach to gap integrity in the run game gave them big play after big play. Including multiple 1-3 play drives. Even Entz said post game he was just hoping to get long sustained drives in those situations, but the offense had other plans.

Apparently not our coaches. They took the Helen Keller approach to watching that and pretended like it never happened. Time to take the blinders off.
