MOLLY HAYS

I was wondering, does anyone know if Molly Hays was recruited by the Grizzlies. Seems like a shame that she slipped away to Idaho State.

Not sure. But, Selvig had all available scholarships used up in fall signing period of Molly's senior season. Molly had a great senior year. If Selvig had a scholarship available, I am sure he would have tried to sign her. Plus, girls high school BB season switched to winter time sometime before Molly's senior senior season. When Girl's BB season was in fall, a coach could scout players in their last season before fall signing period. Not any more. If a player has a great senior year, those schools that sign all scholarships in fall will miss out on late bloomers. Molly was a late bloomer.

Also, Molly's junior season didn't indicate how good she was going to be like her senior season was. In addition, Molly didn't participate in any Lady Griz Basketball camps, so Selvig was never able to make any judgements on her there either.

Plus, from what I read and heard, Molly wanted to go elsewhere, out of state. In addition, She would likely not have started her first year at UM because of the depth that the Lady Griz had last year. She would have played and contributed, I am sure, but not have had the playing time she had at ISU. At ISU, she would have started. At Montana, she wouldn't have. I think she knew that also.

Finally, I wish the Lady Griz were able to sign Molly, as she would have helped a lot. But, you have to consider the needs of both the school and the player. Montana at the time wasn't the right match for Molly. Montana had certain other needs that didn't include a center or power forward at the time. Molly found a place she could play immediately and start.

Win some, Lose some. There will always be some players go somewhere else that we wish Selvig would have signed. Karen Deden, and Lorie Payne are two other players that I wish Selvig was able to sign also.

Robin would have loved to have Molly at Montana (probably her dad too  ), but as TrueGriz stated, all the scholarships were used. Unfortunately Molly signed with ISU and then a couple weeks later one of Montana's scholarships was freed up. I'm not sure which scholarship though as Darci Sandoval, Michelle Vandyke and DeLayne Johnston did not return for the 2003-2004 season (not sure if they all had scholarships either).

Molly plays with the Lady Griz in pick up games over the summer. From what I've heard, I think she would have enjoyed playing in Missoula. She is very nice and a little soft-spoken, so she may have just said nice things about Montana to be polite...who knows.

She is going to be an outstanding player (heck she's already a great player), you can bet on that. It's shaping up like her and Natalie Doma are going to be the force in the Big Sky over the next couple of years. ISU is looking good for a couple of tournament births in 2006 and 2007.

This would be a good topic after things settle down this spring/summer but for my money, in 2 years another if not "the" real force in the Big Sky is going to be Johanna Closson.

I can tell you exactly what happenned with the recruitment/signing of Molly Hays. Robin had offerred a scholarship to a recruit from out of state. The next day the recruit decided not to come. Selvig contacted Hays, however; Molly had verbaled to ISU. She could have backed out and taken Robin's offer but she decided to honor her verbal commitment to ISU. I think things worked out fine for her.

UM fans need to come to terms with the fact Robin cannot take every recruit that is in Montana. MSU is going to get some and some are going to go out of state. It doesn't mean Selvig is perfect, but who is? Do any of you people run your business or do your jobs mistake free?

Thanks for clearing that up Grizbacker1.

Anyone who doesn't think Robin does an incredible job is crazy. We're talking about one of the greatest coaches in women's basketball. There is a lot of talent that comes out of Montana every year, but he goes and gets the players that are best for his program. The only position that the Lady Griz won't have the upper hand at next year will be the 5.

1 - Mandy Morales
2 - Katie Edwards
3 - Johanna Closson
4 - Jody McLeod

That's a tough lineup. The Lady Griz will be a lot of fun to watch again next year! :D

Don't worry, Sara Gale will be good at the 5.
Plus, 6 - 4 Shadra Robison and Hilary Tanneberg will do fine. Gale and Tanneberg are listed as forwards, but I am sure they will be playing center quite a bit and do well. It will be tough going starting out the year in that position. Plus, I do think Selvig has one more scholarship to give, as the Lady Griz are losing 4 players and only signed 3 new players. He may give that 4th to Tamara Jo Guardipee, though, who is also listed as a forward.

Thats very interesting gym rat about molly hays playing pick up games with the Lady Griz. Perhaps they should talk her into transferring to Montana.

I think the Lady Griz will be fine at the 5, but I don't see the team having an advantage at that position. You could argue that Montana may have the best player in the conference at each position in the 1-4 spots.

I think Molly is doing great at ISU. While she would be a fine addition, I don't see why she would want to leave.

Molly may want to leave so her parents dont have to travel so far, she has a red shirt year to burn, she has to call her self a bengal, they wear ugly halloween colors, UM has better atmosphere, better chance to win, better chance to go to NCAA tournament, much better football, ISU isnt exactly the best looking campus and ceretainly has the worst FB venue in the country etc. etc etc. Other than that there's not much reason to leave.

Actually ISU has a good coach and a good chance to cause damage next year.

Molly seems to like ISU, her teammates, and the coaching staff. It would be nice to have her but I would be very surprised to see her transfer and sit a year. Of course, if she did, she could have a Master's Degree before she finishes playing like some other ladies have done> I believe Megan Harrington was the most recent to do just that.

I think it is widely known that Molly wanted to leave the nest. Probably had very little to do with Selvig, the program, scholarships, etc. I think Molly is the type of person who wanted to strike out on her own and write her own history.

What I find striking about Molly is how humble she is (and the womens game in general), if you listen to her interviews she praises her teamates and deflects most of the accolades she receives........

It seems like they are teaching them the right way up there in Missoula. On another note, has anyone looked at how the BSC is buoyed by women from thh state of Montana. What are you feeding those girls and can you do it for the boys.
