Modifying Football Schedules

I have been reading different article here and there about the unknowns of the hopeful college football season.
A couple articles mention that some conference members may or may not play games this year depending on how COVID19 is affecting there state / community etc.
That got me thinking that maybe the normal conference affiliations we know for this year should or could be put aside in an effort to play more regionally to hopefully lesson the chance of spreading the virus possibly more.
Take for instance, maybe look at states of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Games played between UM, MSU, UI, ISU, BSU, WYO. Play a home and away for 12 game season. Maybe even play a “region championship” between the two most winning teams?

States like California have enough teams to play in state only!

Step further, take the state’s of Oregon and Washington. Games between UO, OSU, PSU, UW, WSU and EWU. Again home and away games.

Utah and Nevada: UNR, UNLV, BYU, UU, WSU, SUU.

These in reality could be bus leagues if needed. I think the same could be done for the entire US.

This would at least provide a season of some sort.

Unless things really turn around I don’t see a bowl season or any level of playoffs. So why not do something like this. Really why send people in some cases half way across the country to play “conference “ games.
In all reality this would be a perfect time to make wide spread changes and make things more regional anyhow.

What say you Griz nation?

I say that widespread re-organization isn't going to occur, given the long-term media contracts many schools are under (and their future media income projections, which are tied to continuing conference relationships and contract negotiations with certain other schools).

Do I wish college football was more regional, like back in the good old days when most conferences made geographic sense? Sure. Do I think it will ever come to pass? No.

Sounds and looks like fun, probably won't happen though (as you no doubt know). Would be some interesting match-ups.
You left out Utah St. btw, figured I'd let you know before NavyBlue comes on here to correct you.

Griz playing the Big Boys twice in one season - that would be totally unacceptable in the Big Boys minds!

For what it's worth:

As mickey mouse owns espn and abc, I question whether or not those lucrative contracts are going to weather this storm. (Wonder how the Disney Cruise Lines are doing?).

I believe Disney corp makes something like $70 billion a year, without checking, but I could be wrong. Once it returns, live sports are going to be in big demand, and Disney will be ready to capitalize. And I'm sure they're getting some added revenue this year from Disney+.

Unacceptable in Bobby's mind 2. Our toughest non-conf game is probably CWU this year. The two FCS teams are bad. CWU would beat both of them. CWU will test us big time like they usually do.

I posted this in another thread. Wishful thinking versus reality begs me to use a term I heard quite often as a kid about wishing in one hand and something else in the other. PR posted a link just a bit ago about what the governor of the Big Zero school's state has decreed about football in Eugene in September.

This is reality right now. Facts are a pain in the ass, I know:

I'm a professor, so I'm decently well-aware of how this impacting universities, but I'm not quite clear on what you're getting at here. My last post was only touching on your question of whether the conference media deals would survive, to which I was saying Disney corp will be just fine (one of your articles even discusses what an unexpected boon Disney+ has been), and that on Disney's end, at least, paying those media deals will not be an issue. Obviously if the schools don't play football, that's a whole 'nother question.

You still in grad school at UM? Just curiosity. Enjoy your time there if so. What did you study? (Feel free not to answer anything you see as too personal).

Thanks for the clarification. Just pointing out, rather clumsily I suppose, that several contracts are soon to be null and void due to the present situations that are only going to get worse.

I took the lead from a couple of international students who convinced me to send my transcripts to other schools rather than retake the same coursework in order to meet the BOR stipulation that one third of a program must be taken at U of M. Would have had two more years of courses to finish the program I finished in a year. Still considering finishing up in Missoula just because I'm a professional student and enjoy the college atmosphere.

Bummer to hear you had to transfer, but sounds like it worked out well for you. I understand that desire to be a professional student; I'm essentially a professional nerd. It suits me.

At times I wish my cesspool of useless trivia was as full as PR's, but then again...
