Why hire the best ?

FTC
Disclaimer: I do not know Amie Just, have never met or talked to her, have never contacted her via the web, and do not expect to do any of those things in the future. But fair is fair and taking pot-shots at someone who's barely been on the job a month (see post above) is unfair, and simply ignorant.

Plus, FYI (from LinkedIn and other sources):
Amie Just:
Feature Writer of the Year, Daily Kansan (2017).
Sports Writer of the Year, Daily Kansan (2015, 2017).
Outstanding Journalism Student award, Kansas City Press Club (2016).
Omega Phi Alpha National Service award (2016).
Finalist, Student Writer of the Year, Great Plains Journalism (2016).
Murray Scholar … national sports journalism award (2015).
And some others.

She also has experience as a stringer for the Associated Press and the Washington Post.

I'd say they made a pretty good hire. Let's give her a chance to get her feet wet.

Nice resume. Sure wish my boss would give me a couple months to "settle in" and get to know everybody. Unfortunately, he expects me to produce from day one. My wife was a reporter for 25 years. She never had a boss who let her "ease" into anything either....how hard is it to go out and knock on doors, pick up the phone, attend practice, talk to coaches, players, administration folks, etc., etc.,....if she's familiar with the Nebraska tradition, plugging in here should have been pretty seamless...so, either she's not all that and a bag of chips, or Lee enterprises is in the midst of a conspiracy to make the Bobcats Montana's favorite team....you pick.

How hard is it? Impossible, really. If you called, texted, reached out to or approached any person involved with Montana football outside the scope of the sports information department, that is a direct violation of protocol and you would risk losing your credential permanently. You can't attend practices after the team gets done stretching. You used to be able to use old school practices to break down barriers and open doors on basically every beat in mid-major college athletics. I did it very effectively in Bozeman as recently as 6 years ago despite the fact that I'm a UM grad and, at the time, had a brother playing for the Griz. Now, the gate keepers at every prominent program are very real and the control of contact, and in turn, information is quite real as well.

Colter, Kyle and George. Didn't realize that there were that many controls and impediments. I can understand a bigger program wanting to control coverage to some extent, but Montana, I don't think so. Seems almost silly. I suppose the Leerfield contract/relationship is part of the problem. Thx.

Eric Taber is a dumbshit. Just read one of his many gogriz articles. Total garbage.

Here's an idea, journalists - print these frustrations.

I'm guessing you would have to have an effort by every sports writer and newspaper/skyline in the state, to write stories about it. Otherwise if only one person writes about it and takes a stand they risk losing credentials.

I think you guys have a good one in this Amie. I follow here on Twitter and she's a good follow. Also Amie, if you're single I am also....just throwing that out there. She's kind of cute.

Plus I think she's setting herself up to be a rockstar of a journalist....just being known by her first name. Like people you know by just one name. I mean her byline says that she just covers the griz...just the griz. Although whoever proofreads her stuff needs to catch that they are capitalizing "just" for some reason.

Lee Enterprises owns the Missoulian, the Billings Gazette, the Montana Standard in Butte and the Helena Independent Record. The Missoulian employees a full-time Griz football beat writer, who currently is Amie Just. In an effort to cover both the Bobcats and the Grizzlies state-wide for all four newspapers plus for 406mtsports.com, the Gazette has placed Greg Rachac in Bozeman. Every day, you will see both Bobcat and Grizzly coverage in all four newspapers and online, which is the portion they are really pushing since that's the future.

Reasons the Bobcat coverage is more prevalent, or at least it might seem that way:

1. Greg is a veteran journalist who has covered college football in Montana for nearly 20 years. Amie is fresh out of college, although is already working very hard.

2. Montana State allows reporters to watch a good amount, and sometimes all, of practice. Therefore, there's way more to write about. Also, Montana does interviews before practice and you have a 15-20 minute interview so you can only get four sources max, and that's if you keep each one really short. You have to choose very specific story lines and new ones likely will not arise within the course of a morning since it's all happening before any action.

At Montana State, the interviews happen after practice. So you can ask about the day's events. And there is no time limit on it, so if you'd like to interview 6-7 people for 6-8 minutes each, you certainly can.

The Missoulian is not consciously choosing to run more Bobcat coverage to alienate readers. There's just more Bobcat coverage because of the circumstances. It's pretty hard for someone brand new on a beat like Amie to write about a team she's never watched.

I've followed the Griz since 1994. My parents had season tickets on the 45-yard line on the eastside of Washington-Grizzly Stadium for 22 years until my dad passed away. I've covered the Griz on and off since 2006. I still find it trying to write about a team when you aren't watching them. I've only seen the QBs throw on one occasion: watching the spring game in Butte on television. There's really no chance to watch or analyze anything. Not complaining, it's just the way it is.

This answer actually makes sense. I was kinda ticked until I got this explanation.

Amie likes to read Egriz. She is talking about it on twitter. Pretty excited the cat fan asked her on a date.

Noticed official Griz twitter neglected to tweet the botched extra point....selective release of information ala a dictatorship

When the sun comes up as usual it's not news.

Is she into losers? Some girls just are.

I'll take Amie over Ricechec any day. The only thing that oily bohunk has written new in the last 5 seasons are rent checks.

Amie has been putting out a story every day on Griz football for the last week or so. For those that think we are under represented. I enjoy her reading, and think she's doing a heck of job so far.
