Missoulian question

Originally-after talking to the new editor-the Cat coverage was supposed to be on the comics page, but they ran out of space. Also, was supposed to be in crayon.

IMO, coverage of the bobcat football team in the Missoulian should help the Griz local recruiting efforts..... :coffee:
Realistically, the Bobcats should demand that Lee Enterprises reduce coverage of the Cats statewide.
I only wish Egriz would do the same. This site seems more of a Montana State Interest board than UM....By most standards, MSU is little more than an instate rival for money that UM has to deal with annually. The non stop mention of them on this site is embarrassing.

Maybe you should stop mentioning that other school. I believe this is two straight posts where you keep bringing them up.

LAgriz, we love to blast the mighty msu scats because they win the tough pre-season and they beat us soundly at recruiting Montana kids. U need to move back and get in the game.

Ty will never be the Griz head coach in my lifetime. scats perhaps

It's a small world the MSU obsessed live in. They are rarely competitive, so why spend so much time on them?

It might be three. But that doesn't change the fact that on nearly every thread it is either MSU or North Dakota State that will eventually show up...I could care less who coaches them. When UM prepares to play them, then it might be interesting. UM beats up on MSU more often than not...not even a good rivalry, frankly.

We have a duty to speak ill of the Cats. It's a big responsibility, and not all of us are up to the task. That's why we have Bear Axed.

+1 Bear Axed is the master!

But really....the bobcats get top story in Sunday Missoula sports page, and the U of M volleyball and cross country teams get pages 6 and 7.

More people are interested in the Cats game than UM volleyball and cross-country, believe that

Today's Missoulian is a doozy - not 1, but 2 stories about the Cat's, complete with pictures of the Cat's on the front of the sports section. AJ writes a story about how much Gregorak has improved the Cat's defense, and for balance they include a story by Rachac about how Choate is out to reverse the course of the rivalry. If you were a visitor to Missoula this morning you would think the 'Cat's are Missoula's team, playing a big game here this weekend against some other team from somewhere in Montana. I will give the Missoulian credit, they do have the best coverage of the Cat's in the state.

I don't think it is as sinister as it appears, not an intentional slight to the Griz, but rather the system each writer uses. Every Friday AJ reserves for writing about the opponent, Rachac doesn't do this - ever, as far as I can tell, like most beat writers Rachac writes about the team he covers, not the team they are playing, so every Friday there is a front page story about the Cat's and whoever the Griz are playing. Because the Griz are playing the Cat's that means 2 front page stories, which carries through to all Lee newspapers in Montana (I think the Chronicle lists 5 stories about the Cat's, none about the Griz this morning on their website).

Since the Missoulian, like other Lee newspapers in Montana, decided they have to have balance for "fairness" they run both writers stories on the front of the sports section, hence 2 stories about the 'Cats, none about the Griz the day before the Brawl.

I quit purchasing/reading the Missoulian this year for this specific reason. Let AJ know my feelings, but I doubt he, nor anyone else there cares. F**k 'em, they're dead to me.

Despite single-handedly wrecking the Missoulian's reputation, Gwen "left" the cushy J-School spot Engstrom gave her (oh, the irony of the budget cuts coming home to roost) and is now City Editor at the Missoulian (or at least last I checked). The Peter Principle at work. Even though that technically has nothing to do with the Sports Page, it illustrates the quality of the "management" there these days. That being said, it appears it is state-wide policy for Lee to make sure that the Cats get prominent coverage everywhere. Most of the Gazette stories today are about the Cats, Choate, Gregorak, Newell. You'd guess that the Cats are the hometown team in Billings, just as you'd guess that today reading the Missoulian, or, for that matter, any other "Lee" paper.

The Trib has a story about Newell, a story about UM's Thiebes, and a story about the rivalry -- just about evenly balanced coverage.
