Missoulian coverage

I would ask the following:

1. Does the Missoulian have enough sportswriters and people covering UM football?

2. Does AJ know much about football?

3. Does AJ have good contacts with the coaches and UM football?

4. Do many people even read the Missoulian anymore?

My impression is that Skyline and egriz are way better sources for UM football info than the Missoulian? I agree with Grizz Dad. The Missoulian has been an awful and biased paper for years, but now it's sport page is getting pathetic too.

I don't think the Missoulian is going to last much longer, at least under current ownership.

1) How many people need to be covering an FCS team as they go through spring PRACTICES?

2) David Cutcliffe, the coach of the year for a Duke the team that beat Notre Dame, didn't play college football. You think he knows anything about the game? So, what's your standard for "knowing" about the game or are you just going to bash people because they didn't play it to your pre-determined standard?

3) i.e. does the reporter suck up to the department? You do realize a reporter is supposed to be an unbiased source, yes? If you wanted a horn of regurgitated positivity then feel free to read GoGriz or follow the Sports Info Director.

4) Leading question much? The Missoulian has had positions cut due to decisions most likely at the head of Lee (and this is for all papers across the state) but what benefit do you get from bashing the reporters who still do a solid job but are left in the wake?

1. It's not how many are covering spring ball. It's how many, as well as the quality, of reporters covering Griz athletics, especially football and men's and women's basketball.

2. Do you think the current Missoulian sports reporters know as much about the game as Sample, Neighbors, Kasper, etc.

3. Yes, in a small market like Missoula, it's important for reporters to have good relationships with the coaches, department and others. Look at Sample's coverage of basketball. He has a good relationship with the basketball people and he gets a huge amount of information, some of which he writes about or posts (and some of which he holds until he is able to disclose it).

4. Yes, that's part of my point. The Missoulian and Lee don't have enough revenues, profits and resources to staff a large and high quality sports writing staff. Asking if a reporter has knowledge or contacts is not "bashing". Why don't you just answer the 2 questions I asked, if you are so knowledgeable of this situation?

1) YOU LITERALLY SAID IN THE FIRST QUESTION: "
1. Does the Missoulian have enough sportswriters and people covering UM football?"

How does that not imply quantity? And, how are you measuring quality in an objective manner?

2) I like Fritz a lot but have not read anything from any Missoulian writer that directly shows me one knows more about "the game" than the other. The only person who really writes like they know more about the game is Grizfan-24 over on Maroonblood. Even Brint, whom I respect entirely, would probably quickly admit everything he knows has been learned from just watching it and is simply an advanced casual fan.

I have not read anything from any of those reporters from the Missoulian that specifically talks about packages or why we should have certain personnel in for dime vs nickel, whether UM should employ more traditional tight-end packages instead of the H-back, etc.

3) The person you mention has connections because of where he grew up and where one of his parents works/worked. UM has not worked well with the Missoulian since the Florio days (although the sports reporters now did nothing to perpetuate that witch hunt or weren't even there when that was going down).

4) Your point was to trash on the organization by going after the reporters. The reporters have no control over your complaints. So, what specifically do you wish the current Missoulian staff would do more of, less of, etc. (within the confines that their company is funding them?)? I completely agree the Florio-Missoulian got everything it deserved, but that sports department was not part of that.

Yes, quantity is one problem. Not having enough quantity, and having to cover too many things, leads to less quality. Also, no one at the Missoulian sports dept now is as good as Sample, Neighbor or Kasper, in my view. In football or basketball. One has admitted that he doesn't know much about football. I still like his opinion pieces. None of them has as good of contacts in football or basketball as the 3 former reporters. Jeez, Stitt tossed out the reporters from practice after first allowing them to come to practices, but I assume they couldn't keep confidential stuff Stitt wasn't confidential, but dn't know. The info on egriz is more meaningful and current than what's in the MIssoulian. The Skyline articles are way better. The Sample lawsuit says some stuff about several other sportswriters, and I tend to believe Sample. Sorry, but we just aren't going to agree on this. I'm fine with you liking and supporting the sportswriters at the Missoulian.

has sample gotten up and running yet at skyline? i login there every once in awhile but am always disappointed in there being so much cat stuff and not nearly enough griz stuff.

There would be more Griz content, according to Colter, if we had more Griz subscribers to let Kyle do what he can do. Some of that is putting the cart before the horse though, in my opinion, as I think if there was more quality Griz content they would blow up with subscribers.

I like AJ and think he does a good job.

Regarding a lack of media, print coverage, or "buzz" that is largely because of Stitt.

Fritz and nearly anyone who wanted access to Hauck's practices got it. No secrecy. No closed practices. Stitt is the total opposite.

Almost moot issue as the missoulian is taking on water

Their local reporting personnel has been cannibalized in all departments.

Their print version weak..... Will online reporting be better?

New competition online Currant may cause Missoulian to up their game.

.....personally I doubt it

Let's not make this out to be that Stitt is the only guy on Earth who closes practices.. it's basically common practice among most coaches now. Oregon might be one of the few exceptions.

I'm not. Just stating facts.

However, overall.. open practices are a positive, not a negative. Ppl perform better when eyes are watching. It's just human nature.

How would he know if we were "Griz" Subscribers? Seriously the last 20+ articles are all about the bobcats. Griz content/commitment to griz content needs to come first. Like I said, I log in every once in awhile but if they start leading in griz content, as opposed to the Missoulian, I would be more interested.

I think the math on the second half of that statement is iffy.

If "Griz subscribers" to skyline doubled the number of "cat subscribers," would the Griz get twice the coverage? I don't think so...

Oh joy, another Missoulian bashing thread. The only ones that negatively judge the Missoulian are biased eGriz "fans". Thank goodness what goes on here doesn't represent the real world.

Lee Newspapers also owns the local Daily in my area, The Times-Democrat, Orangeburg, South Carolina and there are at least 2 main stores EVERY day concerning the South Carolina State team (local) and Clemson and USC not to mention the FCS teams in the state but you can be sure they are reporting from every angle possible. I don't see that in any of the Montana Papers. I guess it is a matter of what the locals expect and around here it is football, women's college basketball, and golf...lots of golf...I'm 35 miles from Augusta and 45 Hilton Head. Maybe, the Missoula public wants something more than UM athletics.

Exactly... although an even number would suffice. They have so much cat content, I would love it if we had that much griz content.

Unless of course you aren't you used to the eyes. Which Stitt mentioned as a reason for the drops in the first scrimmage. "Different deal when there are ppl in stands", something along that line I believe...

Along with Duke's David Cunliffe there's another guy who still knows a little about football despite never having played at the college level... Mmm, think his name is Bobby Hauck?
