I was trying to remember who was on that dynasty back in early-mid 60's - I know Glenn Smith was part of it, and later was my h.s. basketball coach. Not sure where he's at now - I heard Spokane area last.

Wouldn't it be fair to add Krysko himself to this list? Not that I agree with Msla necessarily producing the mostest and bestest......but STILL..........how embarassing............

I was giving Sidney Mt. credit for Krysco........ OK you got me

Best give Shelby credit as that is where his h.s. career started out.

Yea ... yea thats it like he said

Ronan : There was Mike Lewis, Greg Hanson, Doug Bauchman, Doug MacDonald, Larry Huggins . The Bob Powell was the Dad and he played on the fabulous Cubs who beat the varsity all three games that year.

Surprising there is no mention of talent from Great Falls or Billings? Conway, Lazosky, Warhank, Lynch's just in the past few years. But hey we got mentions of Danny Spoon and Mosbacher so Im content.

Great Falls: Jack Gillespie (MSU) said to have led the nation in rebounds the same year Lew Alcindor was a Sr. at UCLA. Tom Corontzos could have gone D1 in hoops but opted for football.

Billings: Dan Sullivan (MSU), Matt Garrison (some D1 in Cali.).

Kallispel : 3 Zanons

Name me one other city in the state that has produced better players. Bozeman has had some good ones in Faaborg and Dissley. Anaconda had Estes but overall I don't think you can even begin to argue any other Montana city holding a candle to the talent that Missoula has produced.

Just off the top of my head:

Missoula D-1 players

Jack McGillis, Hellgate Oregon State
Jordon Haquet, Sentinal Griz
Eric Henkle, Sentinal EWU
Sam Riddle, Hellgate Griz
JR Cambell, Hellgate Griz
Dick, Hellgate Griz
Erickson, Hellgate Bobcats
Taylor, Hellgate Griz
Morris, Sentinal Bobcats / Griz
Greene, Hellgate Griz

Who am I missing? This is taking it back to the late 1970's

Man did I forget Matt Kemfert from Missoula Hellgate in the late 80's!!

You get the picture that it is not Missoula that dominates but it is Missoula HELLGATE that dominates basketball

And don't forget that the great Missoula County teams from the 60s played at Hellgate. Sentinel may have stolen our trophies, but not the teams.

is it the talent or the location? are we just trying to keep the missoula folks happy? how many players actually had a profound impact in college hoops? billings has had a more "global impact"

How about the Golden Dome (B-town West)? Pete Conway had a good career with the Bobs and the Lady Griz have taken quite a few from there.
Plus, it hosts class C tourneys each year. No Adams center can claim that!

I think it is Coaching, albeit from a high school coach and sometimes a parent, that can make a frontier player into a Big Sky player! Some Coaches just do a better job of developing talent! Need I mention Eric Hayes!!

You raise a very good point. Missoula is an intelectual town, full of bright aspiring coaches. Plus all hoop junkies have been exposed to quality programs, games and players throughout their young lives. Billings, brings out the city part of basketball. Most great players come from cities, because you can always find a game, with players ready to challenge you. How many times have HS players in Montana had to call 15 people hoping to get a decent run in at the local high school, against the same players they always see. Does Missoula always have a game for wanting hoopers?
