Missoula basketball players

Ok this has little to do with "Griz" basketball but more with "Missoula" basketball. Reading a couple other threads there seems to be three maginal or better D-1 basketball players in Missoula this year; Charlie Cox of Hellgate, Jack McGinnis of Hellgate and Kellen Hasquet of Sentinal. Am I missing someone? If so add them to the list. Lets take a poll then on a few subjects.
1) Who will score the most points in Missoula this year?

My thoughts are that Kellen has never really embraced the scoring role, being a little "passive" on the court , although I believe he has the physical tools to dominate, so I see him as 12-15 pt a game scorer this year.

Charlie Cox is a great player and scorer, but has seemed to peak as a player the last year. McGinnis though seems to be coming into his own right now. He is up to 6-5 very athletic and had a very productive summer. he is my vote.

2) Who would be the better D-1 Player
For me it would be Hasquet or McGinnis I will wait till season end

3) Is Hellgate the team to beat in Missoula?

I'll take a dark horse on who will score the most. Trevor Morris of Hellgate will flourish while opposing teams focus on shutting down Cox and McGillis. Morris is extremely streaky from outside but when he's hot he's HOT FIRE.

The player with the most D1 potential is definitely McGillis. His athleticism is something that D1 schools covet. He's gotten much stronger over this summer, not just in the weight room but also with his perimeter jumper.

Hellgate is definitely the team to beat in Missoula. No questions asked.

Yes if Morris is hitting he is HOT FIRE, but if not, he can help a powerhouse like Sentinel last year lose. His shooting in the Adams center killed Sentinel. Don't get me wrong though Hellgate is the team to beat this year. I think McGillis and Kellen are pretty close now, but as soon as Kellen starts to grow into himself, I think he will be the one to watch

You are right about Morris shooting a good team out of a game, sounds like he already has this year in Great Falls. Have yet to see if his transfer will do more harm or good to the Hellgate Knights. He is definitely not "Hot Fire" yet. McGillis had 23,8,8 & 5blks against Big Sky. He is the player to watch this year. Cox is playing pretty solid as well.

One would think that Hasquet will have the better stats because the mighty Hellgate folks will split the points between the three of them. I really think top to bottom Hasquet gets a slight advantage over Mcginnis as the best prep in Missoula heck maybe the state, in pure basketball ablities. That said though Hasquet doesn't always exert himself like he could. McGinnis, though, is on the up swing as far as developement. He has brought himself from a good highschool player to one of the top in the State. He has been helped by hard work and a growth sprut this last year, he has a tremedous potential to continue to develope. It is early in the season but, but I am real interested to see how it progresses. Will Hasquet put up numbers like his brother did once Henkle left, and/or will McGinnis continue his developement.
Morris maybe over looked but if it is true that he sprouted to 6-4 sounds very intriquing.

Hey Mslacat, Are you spelling Jack McGi(LL)is' name wrong on purpose, or is your L key spitting out N's. So, it's McGillis...not McGinnis. I wouldn't have said anything, but in both your posts you spelled it the same way and everyone in between spelled it right. No big deal. I also noticed that in your first post that originated this message board topic that your choice was McGillis for best player in the state. Now in your last post, you have changed to Hasquet. Curious as to what changed your view. Was week 1 that influential? We will see how the year goes and evaluate both Hasquet and McGillis. I think they are very similar players and equally as talented from the perimeter. However, McGillis is noticably more aggressive and quicker, which to me gives him an edge over Kellen. I think he sees the 'open man' a little better as well. As for Trevor Morris... he's pushin 6'2".

morris is 6'4" with shoes on, which is really the only way anybody should be measured since in our society people always are wearing them.

hasquet and mcgillis are very different. mcgillis is much more explosive while kellen is a much better spot up shooter. kellen is a little craftier but mcgillis gets more done by being a lot more agressive.

mcgillis is getting looked at by a lot of colleges and one coach told me that his athleticism and improving skills are making him more and more attractive. however the same coach told me that it's crowded in the recruiting circles for mcgillis since he had a solid season playing football. jack's situation is close to that nick disly faced a few years ago. that time the star football player chose to stay home and play hoops. i wonder what jack is thinking.

the explosive one, will be making an appearance at the hellgate/sentinel game saturday. gonna have to root for sentinel, i love fischer, but will be hoping for a great show from hellgate.

McGillis I've heard is a talented player but a bit of a "tweener" Maybe not a good enough handle and quickness to play on the perimiter but not quite big enough to be a forward at the D-1 level. It will be interesting to see how he shakes out. He's cut from the Chris Mosbacher (Sentinel) mold.

Trevor Morris is a fairly talented player but all his "Mean Muggin" has to stop. College coaches don't like players that taunt and point after every play. I think he would make a great addition to almost any NAIA team and could contribute at most DII schools. Let's hope he gets his "soilder" attitude in check and has a great year.

Cox is an extremely polished guard. With Morris and McGillis to pass to he should average double digit assists. He may also be Hellgate's most capable scorer and can and should be the one to take over games in crunch time for the Knights.

A player who will be over looked all year is Jake Grimsted out of Loyola Sacred Heart. He is a smooth lefty who can really stroke it. He's averaging 20+ so far this year. It may not be top notch competition but he is the next in a long line of very talented Loyola players.

Hasquet has extremely good skills but just doesn't seem to have the mentality so far to be dominant. Very much like Tim Thomas in the NBA he can put up above average stats without trying to hard. He also has absolutley no help whatsoever and will have to deal with triple teams all season long so it could be a long season for the Spartans if Kellen doesn't fire up.

Baller1...Chris Mosbacher....WOW! Did you just call McGillis a tweener and compare him to Chris Mosbacher? Don't really know what to say to that. Take it easy on Trevor as well. Good player and kid. Lots of hype and pressure for him last night. What did you expect, he's 17.

I didn't take the comparison between Mosbacher and McGillis as a cut down, Chris is a good basketball player that earned a scholarship to a Division II school. Baller1 made a good observation that Mosbacher would not have been a pure fit in any D1 program since he was not a natural at any one position. McGillis is similar since he is undersized for the post and he doesn't shoot the ball that great from outside.
Chris was fortunate enough to be on Sentinel teams that played much better together than the Hellgate squad this year. That Sentinel team produced two D-1 players along with Mosbacher. Chris could handle the ball better than McGillis and could play all five positions in high school.
McGillis is an explosive athlete that is a lot more agressive than Mosbacher ever was. He will have better individual efforts than Mosbacher but it seems that everyone on the Hellgate team this year is out to "get theirs." Jack is very raw still and he has a HUGE upside, if he improves his game as much this summer as he did last summer he will be an impact player at the program he chooses to go to.

Scouting the Hellgate/Sentinel game were coaches from Carrol and Northern. Rumor is that they came to watch Mark Henkel.

Are you kidding me? Mark Henkel. I am not sure if you are just joking, but if your not, don't put things like that on this board, because they don't make you look very smart.

I have a hard time thinking that Northern and Carrol sent down recruiters to look at a Freshman!
BTW does anyone know who has gotten D-1 or other scholarship offers. I know Hasquet has been offered by Montana State, Yale and Northern Colorado, and that he and McGillis has been asked to walk on at Montana. Any other info?

I think they both obviously have scholarships to every frontier in the state, if they want them. Has Hasquet given the 'Cats an answer? Is he unsure if he wants to go there or just keeping his options open? I have heard McGillis has been shown the most interest from Air Force and Idaho as far as D1 goes. I think Durham has been in contact with him as well, but no offer yet.
