University administrators were apprehensive about allowing alcohol sales to students and wanted to limit sales to premium seating areas, but the Legislature insisted that beer and wine be available to all fans 21 and older.

Campus Police Lt. Erik Swanson said the stadium saw less trouble this season than in any of its previous three seasons. There were 56 incidents requiring enforcement action this year, down 10 from a year ago and down nearly 50 from 2010.

One potential reason, Swanson said, is that previous years, fans knew they couldn't drink inside the stadium, so some arrived already drunk. This year, knowing they could get alcohol inside, fans arrived in a better state, he said.

High prices also may have limited consumption, he said. Beer and wine went for $7.25 a cup.

I don't know what the circumstances are for the Golden Gophers, but NCAA rules have prevented alcohol sales inside stadiums to the general public if the stadium belongs to the school. Eastern had a beer garden in the south endzone when they played games at Joe Albi, which they didn't own. Portland State has beer at PGE Park, which they don't own.
The rest of us are out of luck.

Sorry, but you are absolutely incorrect. There is not, and never has been, an NCAA policy against selling alcohol inside a stadium on campus. For proof, Montana sells alcohol at both football and basketball games on campus during games - they just choose to limit who they sell to (certain sections of the stadium) for most games, although they also sell beer once per year at the WAG tailgate party. EWU still sells beer in a beer garden set up at their stadium in Cheney.

I do believe there is an issue at Montana with the type of liquor/catering license they use to sell alcohol in the Sky Club and Canyon terrace Club, but the NCAA has nothing to do with it, and it really comes down to a school policy.

edit: NCAA does ban alcohol sales at events it sponsors, such as FCS and NCAA tournament games (not conference tournaments but actual NCAA tournament games).

You have a fitting username for that post.

That is actually where it came from - back in 2003 or so there was a thread on e-griz about how to increase attendance at Griz BB games - my idea was to sell beer at the games. So I looked into it and asked Hogan about it because everyone assumed (like griz4life) that it couldn't be done, and figured it was as good of user name as any.

Not true. Several NCAA schools sell alcohol in their on campus facilities. Camp Randall is the first that comes to mind but there are a lot more. It was proposed at UM when the 1m deficit came up with Hogan to help get out of debt but Dennison nixed it. I'm not sure where Engstrom stands on the idea but I think it would be a great money making thing for UM.

Eastern still has a beer garden at The Inferno.

I say we kick this off right with dime beers for the App State game. Oh! At halftime we can blow up a bunch of disco records!!

At six different UND sports, M/W hockey, M/W basketball, football, and volleyball, a fan can buy beer. Beer isn't allowed in the student sections. None of those venues are owned by UND. The Alerus Center (football) is part of a hotel / convention / water park / restaurant complex which includes a sports bar with charitable gambling/blackjack.

UNC serves beer in the university owned "stadium". They actually have vendors in the aisles. The vendors seem to like Griz Nation.

They make you stay too. If you leave to tailgate, you don't get back. They served Bloody Marys too

While I don't know who holds the title, UNC's stadium is right in the middle of their campus and they sell beer at the concessions.

That would be awesome. No more cattle drive to the tailgates to chug a couple and get back in line before 3rd qtr. :thumb: UNC is doing something right inside the stadium.

I'd bet the U would implement a "no re-entry after kickoff" policy if they start selling beer in the stadium.

And I'm probably one of the few who would go along with that with no problem.
