Mini camp tryouts vs Rookie Free Agents

An interesting article on the differences between signing an undrafted free agent contract like Jamal Jones did and just getting a rookie mini camp invite like Roberts and Gamboa. Also explains a couple financial differences between why a team would cut a UDFA over a draft pick.

"While there are financial differences, the biggest thing that separates an undrafted free agent from a player on a tryout is the opportunity to make a team."

"Players face an uphill battle during the two- or three-day rookie minicamps that typically feature a mixture of 40-60 draft picks, undrafted free agents and other tryout players."

"If you're getting invited for a tryout, you're not signing a contract. You're basically going out there with a two- or thee-day tryout and then they decide out of this pool of 15 or 20 guys they brought in, 'OK, we're going to sign this one or that one.' Then at that point, (tryout players) sign their contract as an undrafted free agent.""

"During rookie minicamps, the teams provide players with food, lodging and a nominal per diem."

Good luck to Ben and Herbert, they have short time to make a big impression.
