Mike Hagen, founder and president of the Strength Team, died Oct. 11 after suffering a stroke following surgery.

Hagen, 56, started the Strength Team in 2001 as an outreach ministry featuring athletes from different sports and backgrounds, including professional and college football, baseball, body building, power lifting and wrestling, among others.

The team is based in Missoula, Mont., and travels the country offering its services to local churches. During the past 10 years, Hagen and his team have become well-known across Florida, with hundreds of churches across the state having used their services, says David Burton. He is director of David Burton Ministries, an evangelism ministry. Hagen and his team also have participated at the Florida Baptist State Convention’s Crossover events over the last decade.

Hagen attended the University of Montana on a football scholarship. He went on to play with various NFL and USFL franchises from 1982-86.

During the Strength Team’s demonstrations Hagen shares his story about the hurt of losing his father when he was a young boy, the abuse he faced at the hands of his stepfathers over the years and the love and hope he found in Jesus Christ in his early 20s.

“He laid many crowns at the feet of Jesus,” said Burton.

Gary Crawford, former pastor of Westside Baptist Church in Gainesville and a close friend of Hagen’s, says his resilience and integrity could be perceived in the way he made a comeback after his heart attack about 10 years ago and with his involvement in international mission trips to Brazil’s Amazon basin.

To Burton, Hagen was the best sport’s evangelism in the nation. “He was so genuine in his heart and his actions,” he said.

Hagen is survived by his wife, Ann Sanders, and their children, Michael Christopher III, Joshua Lewis and Lindsi Mari.
