to be honest...i am sick of this kid, It will make a great story and yeah i would love to see him suceed because im a griz fan. I dont think he deserves a scholarship because i personally think he has gotten 2 chances too many. The griz basketball program is going in the direction that fans wanna see and have Chavez stick around is just holding the team back, I think this upcoming class has a chance to make it to the sweet 16 with the talent and the coaching staff. This is his last year if he doesnt step up his grades cause we know he has the talent to be a solid player but he messes up this year....he will be sent home

He's not on scholarship, so I don't see the harm in letting him try to earn one again. He is a very talented player and the Griz could really use him. I don't see how a player who is not taking up a scholarship could possibly be holding the team back at all. He'll be without a scholarship this year so if he contributes at all it will do nothing but help the Griz. Hopefully he'll be able to earn a scholarship back and be the great player he can be for the Griz.

As for 538's post. That was completely classless...

Umdeez,

I think that question was directed toward me so let me give you my take on why i think it woul dbe a great story if Chavez makes it. First of all, have you ever been to Browning or Hear Butte? There is a 99% alcoholism rate over there. That in and of itself is a recipe for failure. Kids have sports, or drugs and booze. More often than not they end up drinking when all the glory days of high school are over.

The ones that think about going to college are in a Catch 22. If they leave the reservation, they are often chastised for leaving their culture behind and turning their back on their people. No kidding! I know it is hard to believe.

If they stay in town what have they got to look forward to? There are no jobs and everyone is on the bottle damn near.

The ones that are going to give college a shot hear the whispers how no Indian ever makes it. They are subject to prejudice and hatred. Yeah, I know, hard to believe that could happen in Montana.

So cut the kid some slack. Lets hope that he does succeed and maybe some kid in Browning or another reservation will see Mike has overcome his battle and they will be inspired to do the same. If he helped one other kid make it, don't you think that would be a pretty good story?

This instantly qualifies as the "Maroon Colored Glasses Quote of the Year!".

Congratulations, Swilly!

Head down to the Pickle Barrel and see if they have added the "Reality Sandwich" to the menu; looks like you should order a Whole...

The Griz making it to the Sweet 16 is as likely to happen as me winning the lottery (and I've NEVER bought a ticket in my life!).

A couple points:

1 As mentioned before Chavez is NOT under scholarship.

2. Chavez has struggled at UM, no doubt, but I would still love to see him come through and succeed at the D-1 level. Most of the struggles I see dealing with are very common with the average Student attending UM. Thinking back to my own college days I can think of a handful of my friends who had similar problem, and I can tell you most of them learned and grew up during their college carreer and are pretty darn successfull now. If he can come back and finish out as a Griz basketball player what even if it is for only his senior year, he will just ptove he is human, but has made himself better. That is something I can hold up to my kids and say " never give up"

3. This years Griz recruiting class is a very good class, but one good class will not get you a Big Sky Title let along a sweet 16. It generally takes 2 or three great recruiting classes in a row to develope that kind of team. Right now Weber St., Montana State, and Montana are considered to have the best recruiting classes in the sky, and the jury is still out as to who has had the best class. A good recruiting class is important, but when the other people in your conference are doing as good a job as you, you need to put together back to back to back great recruiting years. Remeber also UM, MSU, and the like have a great recruiting year when we sign 2 star athletes with an accational 3 star athlete thrown in. Sweet Sixteen teams are signing 3 star folks as a minimum and 4 & 5 star folks regularly.

as you know, i agree with you completely, mslacat, and always enjoy your posts. but if it takes three or four great recruiting classes to get to the sweet 16, let me say, in my opinion, the griz are halfway there. i believe the last two classes are the best back-to-back in the history of the school, lacking only a stellar underclass point guard. even that deficiency will be cured if austin swift can play the point (though i see him more as a three, eventually.) if kyle sharp is as good as advertised, and jordan hasquet fulfills the promise of the internet rumors about his summer play, the griz are gonna be loaded.

i know too the cats have had exceptional back-to-back classes; weber is always tough, and eastern continues to build a solid program. i think big sky basketball is poised to create a lot of excitement in the coming years.

I meant to say it takes consecutive top notch recruiting classes to win the the Big Sky! I think it would take 4-5 outstanding (by Big Sky standards) to be a ligit sweet 16 team, not just a fluke team. Over the past 10 years or more Weber been the top recruiting team, in my opinion. They simply have a big advantage over the rest of the Sky. Location, better weather, solid facilities, stablity in their program and did I say location, have all help there program. We (Cats and Griz) will always be fighting their advantages. We simply have to recruit harder just to keep up.

"The Griz will never be a sweet sixteen team" and as for Chavez having had enough chances, I agree. However, I would consider letting him play w/ out a scholarship because he is a good player and can contribute. He has had too many chances to earn a scholarship but I would let him come back on tight string.

Mike does not currently have a scholarship. I hope he is on the team this and contributes significantly. He has the talent to do so and could be a real bonus for the GRIZ. Plus, I'd like to see him do well.

mslacat-you said Chavez looks in great shape. I haven't seen him since last b-ball year, where he looked VERY out-of-shape. Do you agree with that? Does he look noticeable better? If you say he never looked out-of-shape then I won't believe he looks great now. If you say he looks WAY better than before maybe there is hope.

Either way, I agree he should in no-way shape or form ever get any scholarship again from UM. I would never even give him another chance myself, but for sure he should be doing this on his own if we're gonna allow him an 8th ( I lost count) chance. How long are we gonna try to hold his hand? He is an adult now, native or non-native. That is totally irrelevent. He has embrassed the Griz name too many times for my liking. That has nothing to do with his race. We all can appreciate to some degree that he has had to overcome obstacles, but he has come-up short on MANY things-alcoholic, terrible grades, missed flight.

i will be absolutely shocked if he can put everything together to ever actually play again for the Griz. I just don't see it happening. I have ZERO faith in him.

What are all the chances you guys think Chavez supposedly got? I will warn you in advance that I'm pretty much in the know on this subject.

If you are in the know than you must understand this kid has had more than his fair share of "get out of jail free cards". I am all for giving a person a second chance, but this is getting ridiculous.

Sir, you are reading way to much into my text. I have no axe to grind, hell I don't even know the kid. I am just sick of all these athletes that get preferential treatment and chance after chance.

I meant nothing by the "get out of jail" comment it was merely a colorful way of saying he had enough chances. If this kid would have put half the energy you say he is using now to stay out of trouble, into a little preventitive maintenance he wouldn't have a thread like this about him.

Most of the time I subscribe to the theory that if a kid starts having problem after problem like Chavez, chances are he is going to continue on that path. One chance is usually warranted, possibly 2, but you know he is going to be well past that by the time he ah er hmm graduates.

Just my opinion.

Fact- he got a DUI.
Fact- he is/was academically inelligible for awhile.
Fact- he missed a plane.....just heard that not sure if it's true.

I believe there was one more instance, but you are correct I don't know the facts about that one.

Looks like at least 3 chances............Why not 8 or 12....32?

He had his chances, he blew them and he should learn from this, maybe tell a kid he knows not to piss away a free ride and god givin talent.

Hey man I was just voicing my opinion and you jumped all over my Facts.

You need to chill out and quit acting like you know everything about the case....unless your his lawyer. I am done with this arguement and I still stand by my posts.

obg- "fact, he missed a plane, just heard that, not sure if that's true" Are you sure you know the difference between a "fact" and an "opinion"? :-?

I can't agree with you guys. I smell prejudice or an axe to grind. Personally, I have to give a person credit for coming to his coach and admitting that he has an alcohol problem. As for grades, he basically has had one bad, in fact very bad, semester, but has done reasonably well all or most of the rest of the time. By the way, some athletes have problems with grades. I don't see why a kid shouldn't be given another chance, or two, because of grades. Didn't UM have at least two other players with grade problems the past couple years? Should we have not given another chance to Davis? "Get out of jail free card"? What's that in reference to? Chavez was arrested for a DUI in Missoula, but was not convicted of one. Lots of other UM athletes have had DUI, and pled to the DUI, and then were still on their teams. Chavez is basically a good kid, and the present and former coaches have consistently said that. He's a better kid than a number who have played on the team, including in recent years. Missed flight? Dlouhy missed the same flight. Should he have been kicked off the team? In my view, Chavez has worked hard to overcome various obstacles and could have given up and left UM a number of times, but he has shown a strong desire to play for the Griz and attend UM, and he has shown more persistance and determination than many. While Chavez has shot himself in the foot more than he should have, and while he has been given some chances, I'd rather have him on my team than a couple of you guys (and that's not because of his playing ability).

So when Chavez misses a flight, you'll point out others who have. When Chavez gets DUis, you'll point out others who have. When Chavez gets horribles grades, you point out that others have while not denying any of those 3. That is 3 chances right there. I am far from convinced he has been ineligible more than one semester unless you are taking his tests and turning in his papers as well as being his enabler I have personally seen Chavez shit-faced in a bar/kicked-out for being a stumbling drunk while on scholarship. I am sure others have done that too. Point that out. Just don't admit that Chavez has ALL these things piled up. THAT is the point. Dlouhy missed one flight, then no other problems. THAT is the difference. ONE screw-up is understandable. A chronic offender needs to learn at some point enough is enough. We just keep letting him back like Terrell OWens because he has talent. It is pathetic. When will this University get some scruples and weed out these losers? All because he might help us win a game. Just put a fricking keg on the bench if we are gonna keep letting himn drink his talent away.

Well said Zirg, I wanted to say that, but my post sucked compared to yours. I agree with every word you wrote.

Now lets wait for the excuses about his race, and alcoholism, and the worlds out to get this guy.....yadda yadda yadda. None of that stuff matters, they are just more excuses, it all boils down to personnal accountability and he ain't got any.

I bet you would. You would pick a 5 time loser over a pillar of the community to prove a point. I would bet on it.
