I chuckle and appreciate your suggestion to call the coaches but I do know my real expertise is as a pee brain fanatic of B Ball responsible for coaching from the stands.
Doesnt it just drive you nuts Backer to see Ellis able to penetrate and then get hung up in the air with nowhere to go or afraid to shoot over the towers? What possible good does it do to go in there and then get stuffed like a fresh Hutterite Turkey on Thanksgivin day, every time?Give me a point or an off that can at least have the chance of driving in there and jam it in their face. Mayes can do it. Dhuly might be too slow.
Let's face it, there have been good nights and bad from nearly everyone on the team. Ellis isn't starting in case you missed that. He is coming off the bench, yet leads the Griz in steals and assists. Ellis also has more turnovers which is normal if you handle the ball more than anyone else. Ellis is 5th in the BSC and first among non starters in assists. Ellis is 4th in the BSC overall in steals, and again, first among non starters. Ellis is 7th in assist to turnover ratio in the BSC and first for non starters. Montana leads the BSC in that category by the way. I think you could make a case he should start over Martin.
Rundles is a freshman and is going to run hot and cold as most freshmen do, Stuckey was an exception as we all know. Rundles is no Stuckey but will be an excellent player I believe.
Martin has been too inconsistent, but his play of late has improved.
Dlouhy finally is showing some semblance of last year when he played with intensity the entire game. He did not do that until recently and has shown he can contribute even when his shot is not falling, EWU was a perfect example.
Hasquet is the best player on the floor right now for the Griz. A lot of that is due to the double teams Strait draws, which opens things up for Jordo, but that is what team basketball is all about.
Mayes has been an enigma this season. He shows flashes of brilliance in some games and disapears in others. If you had seen hom play at Sac State for example you woul dwonder why he was on scholarship (most of the team played that way at Sac for the record) then he plays like he did against EWU and Stuckey in particular and he opens a lot of eyes.
People are frustrated with the substittion patterns of Tinks, yet when you never know from one game to the next what you can expect from a player, especially the veterans, then one can hardly blame Tinks for trying different combos, if he didn't people wuld criticize him for that, so he can't win, unless the Griz win. Tinks is no different than any other Griz BB Coach I have ever seen, they are second guessed by fans all the time, Heathcote included.
