GREAT FALLS - The Great Falls Explorers have waived forward Mike Chavez and three other members of the team.

The 6-foot-7 Chavez played in only seven games for the Continental Basketball Association team and averaged 3.3 points per game in just over 11 minutes a contest.

Chavez, a former Browning and University of Montana player, started out the season on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury. He was returned to injured reserve on December 27th.

The Explorers have also released post Mike Harmon, forward Omar Guinea and guard Vinson Smith.

That is life as a Professional. May be time for Mike to move on with his career. The best thing he ever did at UM was get his degree, when hardly anyone thought he would last more than a year or two. Good luck to him.

Amen GB1, he got a chance that a many athletes don't get, to play professionaly (any sport).

From a business standpoint, this is a big mistake for the franchise. These CBA teams struggle to bring in much for attendance or spark much local interest. Mike Chavez just being on the team gave reason for people to pay attention to the team. With him off the squad they are really gonna have some troubles getting local support. Maybe they should look up Kevin Criswell.

David Bell last year on the Butte Daredevils.......a big part of why people went to those games.

This CBA franchise is going to go the way of all CBA franchises in Great Falls. The way of the Golden Nuggets (coached by George Karl) and the previous team (blue sky?, big sky?). Professional basketball has been marketed as a superstar game. Showcase your LeBron, Kobe, etc. There are no superstars at the CBA level, but they play the same game. It is a boring game to watch and this model will never succeed in Great Falls unless you have a doubling of the population.

I remember watching the Catbirds of La Crosse, WI when i was young. I believe they got a decent turnout. This was in the pre-Isiah Thomas CBA though. Also, the team was coached by a young Flip Saunders.

An awfull lot of it is marketing. Minor league teams have done well in smaller markets, its just a matter of sparking local interest. Great Fall's minor league baseball team has been sucessful because they have been able to get local support and corporate sponsorship. A large part of this is because they are a part of a major league corporate franchise with many marketing resources at their disposal. The CBA, if it wants sucess, needs to provide some sort of marketing blueprint.
