Mid Major Top 25 poll.

grizpack said:
A serious question: What or Who decides whether you are a "mid-major" or a "mid" or a "major" or a "minor"???

In football, at least isn't it tied to scholarships?

All schools in division 1 basketball are limited to same number of scholarships (13). There isn't any 1A or 1AA in basketball.

The poll is of schools in certain conferences which are listed at the bottom of the website with the poll.

Here are the conferences:

NOTE: The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Continent, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Sun Belt, West Coast.

I would say the person(s) that developed the poll are the ones that decide who is mid-major. From looking at the conferences, I would say these are the ones that aren't in the BCS in football.

Football has no explanation either. There was a thread about it over on anygivensaturday.

Also, this poll is from 12/05/05. The Griz had just beaten Stanford two days earlier, but were still only 4-1. We played 3 games this week, and now stand at 7-1. The only way we move up is to keep on winning, which we did. Hopefully we will be on this list in the near future.

Just saw a post about this on AGS indicating we are now in at #25 in the latest edition of this poll:

The Griz are finally on the radar at #25. Nice work Griz! I also see that our late December opponent, UW-Milwaukee, is sitting at #11. That should be another great home win for the Griz!

Still curious about that 1 vote for Montana State.

Maybe Durham got a vote.....:-)

Since the Mid-Major poll looked so bad from what I could tell, I made my own. :thumb:

Reasons why the mid-major poll is not credible:
1) MSU is getting votes. They are quite possibly the worst team in the nation (besides Northern Colorado).

2) Western Michigan getting votes isn't much better. They're 274 in the RPI.

3) Southern Illinois is on the verge of being ranked and they've lost games to Monmouth (239) and a non D-1 team. And their best win is against EWU (181).

4) CS Fullerton at 19?!?! At 4-2, with one win over a non D-1 and a loss to San Francisco, they shouldn't even be getting votes.

Last but not least:
5) How can Oral Roberts be ranked 14th when they've started 4-3, with 3 of those wins coming against terrible teams and the other against a mediocre Southern Cal? Simple. Just put your head coach as the chairman of the poll!

So here's my attempt at a somewhat unbiased poll for the mid-majors.

1) Gonzaga
2) Bucknell
3) Indiana State
4) Iona
5) Northern Iowa
6) UNC Wilmington
7) Buffalo
8) Winthrop
9) Old Dominion
10) Missouri State
11) Ohio
12) Wichita State
13) Wisconsin-Milwaukee
14) Davidson
15) Loyola-Chicago
16) Tennessee Tech
17) Middle Tennessee State
18) Butler
19) Montana
20) Creighton
21) Pacific
22) Western Kentucky
23) Northern Illinois
24) Northeastern
25) Virginia Commonwealth

I've also got Drake at 39, Idaho State at 43, and Santa Clara at 48.

A possibility:

In the purpose of spreading the love, the voters may be required to vote for a certain number of teams in each conference.
