Bullspit. Those people are right on the mark. I hear alot of sour-grape type talk here from what I would consider to be very spoiled so called "fans". This program has survived numerous coaching changes the past 17 years amazingly. This year we lose the AD, head coach, OC, DC, starting QB, and another position coach or two, not to mention a record number of seniors from the 2011 team. I was prepared to suffer what I would consider "growing pains" with this team this year, just as we did in '92 with Don Read. We went 1-5 to open up that season. I heard alot of similar talk as I see on this board right now, although it wasn't on a computer forum like this. We won the last 5 games that season to finish 6-5, but many so called "fans" were calling for the man's head at that time as well. Very few people in their right mind, at least of the quality that we are longing for, would throw their name into the hat at this time with the uncertainty that hangs over the program.
Just IMO
You are right, we have survived many coaching changes as well as many very good players graduating, and losing entire coaching staffs. The thing is, the Griz always seem to survive that and do well. The excuse of losing so many seniors may sound good but we've lost a lot of seniors on other teams before.
For example, the 2007 team has 22 seniors (2011 had 23, so just one more).
What did we do in 2008? We went 14-2 and went to the NC game.
Now I agree that losing a ton of seniors hurts, as does losing the coach, having a new OC and DC, and new QB... but shit we've dealt with big changes here in the past and still had a playoff team that other teams didn't want to play against. Even in 2005 when we had (statistically) a couple very iffy QBs in a transfer (JW) and freshman (CB) we still ended up as a playoff team.
This year we still had a ton of talent on the team (remember the old saying, the Griz don't rebuild, we reload?) and somehow we didn't even seem to improve offensively throughout the year. If anything we seemed to go backwards.... some of the numbers may not show that since we played much weaker opponents later in the season (minus MSU of course). I think that's one the big complaints that people have about this staff.
Where were the improvements?
Where were the adjustments?
What is going to be different about next year?
Anyway this is all moot point anyway, since Delaney does have a 2 year contract, is not going to retire, and is not going to be fired. I just hope that we see significant improvement next year, or we could be looking at a really rough season. We have @UND, Cal Poly, App State, EWU, @NAU, @MSU and @SAC next year. Not exactly a cupcake laden schedule.
