Metzger-Jones Joins Montana Grizzly Basketball Coaching Staff
University of Montana
May 10, 2011
MISSOULA, MONTANA – Jonathan (he goes by Jono, which is pronounced jon-oh) Metzger-Jones has joined The University of Montana basketball coaching staff, announced UM’s fifth-year mentor, Wayne Tinkle.
He replaces Andy Hill, who recently joined head coach Larry Krystkowiak’s staff at the University of Utah.
Meztger-Jones comes to Montana from UC Santa Barbara, where he worked for the past four seasons. He was an assistant coach for three of those seasons with the Gauchos and served as the program’s Director of Operation’s in his initial year in 2007-08.
While at UCSB, his duties included all aspects of on-court coaching (working with backcourt players), recruiting, and scouting. His responsibilities with the Grizzlies will be the same, and he will also assist with the logistics surrounding basketball camps and other team community-oriented functions.
“UCSB has made back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and 2011, and Jono played a large role in those accomplishments through his coaching and recruiting efforts,” Tinkle said.
“We are excited to have someone the caliber of Jono joining our staff,” Tinkle said. “He is a man of high character, and he’s been instrumental in the success at Santa Barbara the past several years. He fits in nicely with our other coaches, in player development and academic success, recruiting and community outreach.”
Prior to his stint at UCSB, Meztger-Jones spent one year as the Director of Operations at Cal State Fullerton.
He played for head coach Bob Burton (now the head coach at Fullerton) at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif., from 1997-2000. In his final season at West Valley, he was the team’s Most Valuable Player and team captain. That season he led the state in three-pointers with 123.
Metzger-Jones continued his collegiate career at the University of Pacific in Stockton, Calif. His senior year he tied for the team lead with 48 three-pointers, and he finished his career ranked among the Tigers’ top-10 all-time three-point shooters. He was named to two all-tournament (Nebraska Huskers Classic and Lobos Thanksgiving Tournament) teams during his career at Pacific.
Following his career at Pacific, Meztger-Jones played professionally in Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, and Finland. From 2000-07 he served as a Site Director/Counselor for the Golden State Warriors Youth Basketball Camps.
He graduated from Pacific in 2002 with a B.S. degree in business administration. A native of Oakland, Calif., he graduated from Bishop O’Dowd High School.
Jono is engaged to Alison Keck of Pullman, Wash., and they will be married in Santa Barbara this June.
Metzger-Jones recently began working at UM.
