Mellott to NO Saints

I wonder how the process worked that brought him to the Saints ? Agent? I hope he does well as he pursues his career. I did read where the Saints had several players at a tryout yesterday. Odd that the team did not already have a practice squad in place. They chose 3 players which included Tommy.

I’m happy for him. He is a great representative of the state of Montana and deserves a shot.
"Deserves got nothing to do with it" William Muny.

Actually I believe he has "earned" a shot, is more precise. Now he'll have to take advantage of the opportunity, by doing what he has already mastered in college, instead of a trying new positions. Raiders wasted drafting him hoping they could make him something he wasn't (yet).

I agree. People like Everett are disappointed.
Not disappointed in the least. Happy for the guy.

None of which changes the fact that I've been 100% accurate in my predictions for him, and "people like you" who anointed him the next inductee into the nfl hall of fame are pissed about that.

What were you right on? I don't recall. Please show us a quote or two.

You certainly didn't "predict" what I did, as summarized below.

I've been right on most of what I said about Melllott. He was a great college player and the straw that stirred the Cats drink. He would win the Payton. He would drafted. He would make an NFL team.

Never met Mellott, but have seen a few interviews. And even kitty-haters agree that he’s a fine young man, a credit to Montana and his parents, etc. I too wish him well.

He’s also clearly a gifted athlete. But his skills put him in a peculiar situation in terms of the NFL. Despite some “happy talk,” does anyone really think he can make a roster competing against experienced NFL Wide Receivers and other athletic guys who spent 3-4 college years honing their WR skills? Perhaps the New Orleans WR room is really, really weak. But that does not seem to be the case.

Still, the Saints acquired him for their practice squad. So what’s up? It’s possible that that they’re simply betting on his athletic ability. He has improved his passing skills, but it seems unlikely that he can reach an NFL level at that position. (Also, at “just” 6 feet tall, he out of the NFL preference range for a QB.) A nifty runner, he is probably not big enough to be an “every down” back in the NFL. He showed flashes as a kick returner in preseason, but hardly enough to move the needle that way.

It makes me wonder if their coaches have some creative idea(s) that they want to try out. How about a swing back who can get loose in the open field, with the threat of a halfback pass? Maybe the Saints want to try some wildcat formations. Beats me. But, as I said, I wish him well.
