*data center

Fact, data centers are in high need all across the US. They take up a ton of space...are ugly...and provide about 10 jobs.

The Dalles, Washington has Google's main data center, to take advantage of the BPA power and BPA's heavy network of fiber optic. It is a world unto itself and other than being a pain-in-the-neck of high secrecy, it has had virtually no impact on "The Dalles," which you can accidentally miss driving through it today just the same as you could accidentally miss it ten years ago before the data center went in.

Did they move The Dalles across the river or something?
Well, it's official address is "The Dalles, Oregon," and for those that take the Interstate, that's on the Oregon side. If you take the two lane, that's on the Washington side. The Dalles Dam and the airport are located on the Washington side. The BPA's Pacific Direct Current Celilo Intertie (an HVDC line and fiber optic system that serves California) begins at the Dalles and heads south, and that is the reason for the data center there.

The Dalles is still in Oregon as is Google's data center https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/locations/the-dalles/

Little ol' Prineville hosts data centers for Apple and Facebook...

Fair enough. Just never heard it referred to as being in Washington. :thumb:

The amount of land they are looking at is far greater than what is needed for a data center. They don't send 100's of execs to scout out data center locations.

"They" aren't looking, and "they" didn't send "100s" of executives, and they are calling it a "data center."

Is a data center like those server farms that you see in no man's land in Central CA?

EDIT: never mind. Googled it (haha) and, yep, I don't think you're getting many executives to man the servers.

What did you think they were looking to build? Both companies already have pretty well-established corporate locales. :?

Although a "smirking" emoji isn't currently available with this editor, you could have used ;)

I honestly wouldn't put it past a Cat fan to think Google was packing up and shipping out of Silicon Valley to Bozeman.

Well, now, Coach Ron Ash's home is available for Pichai to live in, so....

I've not been to the Bay area recently but was just in Bozo for Griz-cat and the place is crawling with more stocking-capped, skinny jean hipsters than Portland! Might it be the perfect place for Google's HQ?

All I know is that they are looking at large plots of land which seems to be overkill for a data center.

How large a plot do you think a Google data center requires?

http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/google-data-center-faq-part-2/

Large parcels of land, which allow for large buffer zones between the data center and nearby roads. This makes the facilities easier to secure, and is consistent with Google’s focus on data center secrecy. Google purchased 215 acres in Lenoir, 520 acres for the Goose Creek project, 800 acres of land in Pryor, and more than 1,200 acres in Council Bluffs. The extra land may also be used for building windmill farms to provide supplemental power at some facilities.

Microsoft is coming as well...

"They" were solicited. The Bozeman people traveled to Palo Alto to promise, beg and plead. It is what economic development groups do. Bozeman is an unlikely choice; lack of major power, a single fiber optic trunk line; just not what they need.
