McSurdy - NFL Combine

Something to think about: Caleb is the ONLY LB in the Combine out of ALL FCS schools. I'd provide the link, but I can't. Caleb, then, is a good measure of LB talent in the FCS. This year, at least. So, in a way, he represents the FCS for his position at the Combine. :twocents:

Ouch. Reading that site that jcu put up it kind of shows those #s weren't too solid afterall.

3-cone 15th out of 20.

20 yard shuttle 7th out of 21. His best showing by far

60 yard shuttle 10th out of 10.

Why were there 21 guys who did the 20 yard shuttle, only 20 that did the 3-cone shuttle and only TEN that did the 60 yard shuttle? That seems wierd to me...

You can pick what event/s you want to do. Just like Luck and RGIII deciding not to throw.

Well, Kudos to him them for doing ALL of them and not picking and chosing just the ones he might do well in.

Not the best press overall but the attention he's had so far will land him on a team (hopefully still a draft pick) but if not a free agent pickup and in camp I'm pretty sure Dirty will make a splash.

McSurdy thought he did well, except for his 40. Said he thought his draft stock went up. See below quote from Statesman article linked above:

"“I think I helped (my draft stock),” said McSurdy, who weighed in at 6-foot-1 and 245 pounds. “I showed teams that I’m pretty intelligent and I did some good things testing-wise. If I can clean up that 40, I should be in good shape.”

McSurdy was hoping to run the 40 in 4.75 seconds. He will return to Arizona for training before participating in Montana’s pro day on March 9"

McSurdy put up better numbers than Kellen Moore in every common event, except was a few hundredths of seconds below Moore in the 40.

Well what do you expect him to say, "I did terrible and no team is going to draft me."?

Also I'm confused as to what your last quote has to do with anything, they don't play the same position and aren't comparable players. The inclusion of it just confused me.

Maybe you are the type of person who would lie about how he felt he did, but McSurdy is not that type of person. He would not lie about that, just like he didn't lie about or spin his 40 time. If he said he thought he improved his NFL standing, then he did feel that way.

I thought it was interesting the McSurdy's times/numbers were better than a big time all-american qb, except for the roughly equal 40 time. Sorry I confused you. Doesn't surprise me that a Cat would be confused by things like this.

I have found that people who say what you did, i.e. what do you expect him to say (indicating that he wouldn't be honest), lack integrity and/or lie. I'm not saying this applies to you, but I have found that to be the case over the years.

Agreed. Those times look much better and are more indicative of his value.

Solid numbers, great to hear

Should I even be surprised that PR didn't feel like including the "out of" part of those results? More evidence of how he tries to manipulate stats.

I didn't see the "out of" numbers until I looked at this thread. I took the info from Top Performers in the combine website, which lists ranking but doesn't list the out-of numbers. I don't manipulate stats. I just present them. Everyone else is welcome to provide their own stats, as long as they are accurate. By the way, the out-of stats don't concern me, because he performed reasonably well in those drills, and he will get credit to doing the drills and the others won't. Presumably, many of the others who didn't do the drills did not do them, because they knew they would not perform well. The NFL knows that.

The Mile High guy just repeated what the Ida Statesman guy said, and neither one of them knows what they're talking about. I'll take MsSurdy's view on his performance, at least for now. He had probably talked to his agent too, who would know how the numbers looked for him. If the NFL scouts start saying he didn't perform well, then I will believe them.

have we ever had two defensive players as good as tru and dirt in the same class? have we ever had two at the nfl combine?
No and No.

that's kind of what i figured. next question is are they the best two to play those positions for us. mlb and cb. yes and yes is my guess.

I agree unless you consider Crebo a MLB. He played both while at UM so while Crebo is the best overall LB I would put McSurdy as the best true MLB. Tru is miles in front of anyone else at corner.

I wouldnt take it that far. Trey Young and Calvin Coleman arent that far behind him.

I have to go with WaGriz here, I've NEVER seen a single player on defense avoided as much as Tru was in a single season this year. I mean... in most all games he flat out shut off 1/3 of the field to the passing game. At this level... that's just something I've not ever seen EVERY TEAM we've played in one year all game-plan the same way.

Tru's a beast. Might not ever see a player like that at Montana again.

Agreed on both fronts....

Didn't Elvis get 120+ yards on him? :) And yes I know we lost the game :)
