McSurdy - NFL Combine

Ouch that's not too good.
At least in a couple of the drills McSurdy didn't drop passes like some of the other guys. I hope that helped him out for getting drafted a lil higher.

That's about what was expected. I doubt there were any scouts that saw him as faster than 4.8. He is going to be fine.

He outran the Sam Houston offense, and we know they have some burners, on that interception return. Gotta count for something, right? ;)

That return did seem to take awhile though...
My point is a 4.88 40yard dash from a true Inside Linebacker like Dirt is not a huge problem at all. There are plenty of teams that will be fine with that time. Caleb is doing great.

Good points, his play speaks for itself as well. I was really hoping for a 4.7 or better to really boost his stock and get him drafted into the late rounds. The rest of his showings sounded pretty on-par for what was expected out of him. Obviously he showed his strength is a big factor and the other big thing about him of course is his play ON THE FIELD, which you really can't test in the combine.

Caleb has some good moments and some not as good moments but at least he caught the ball. McSurdy still has time to prove himself a little better.
Did anyone else hear the announcers giving props to Tru but mentioning he had some "off the field issues" that needed looking into?

His 40 time is now listed at 4.97 on the combine website. But check out these terrific results.

3-cone - 7.26 (15th)

20 shuttle - 4.28 (7th-tie)

60 shuttle - 12.30 (10th)

These tests would seem to be more important numbers for an inside linebacker, especially one who might be more of a run-down player.

Agreed. Those times look much better and are more indicative of his value.

have we ever had two defensive players as good as tru and dirt in the same class? have we ever had two at the nfl combine?

I wish Caleb all the luck in the world. IMO with the way NFL offenses are playing these days. It is paramount these linebackers can drop into coverages. This is where I think McSurdy may fall short. It is nice to say that he is a good run stuffer, plays hard..has the intangibles. All these players at the combine can play. I just think in todays game teams are going to shy away from linebackers who struggle in coverage, and are primarily run first players..There are a lot of those guys out there. Not a whole lot that do both.

You may be right. However, a good 40 time is not necessary to drop back into coverage. That's reaction, agility (which some of these other drills help measure), and running/moving backward. 40 time is more important for covering a tight end or running back 1-on-1, which outside backers have to do much more than inside backers.

I don't necessary agree that all of these guys can play. The NFL puts a huge premium on athleticism and speed, as well as size. My guess is that some of these guys are probably athletic specimens, but don't necessarily have the instincts and skills of others at the combine (and not at the combine). The NFL knew that McSurdy didn't have speed. They must have invited him because they saw his terrific talent, and wanted to get a closer look at him.

Whether he gets drafted or not, I hope he gets a chance with the right team, i.e. one that will look hard at his particular talent and skills, as opposed to his 40 time and level of athleticism.

And particularly in the NFL there are defensive schemes that "hide" linebackers who aren't as good in coverage and use them almost exclusively as a blitzer up the middle in 3-4 schemes. Him getting drafted by a 3-4 team to play inside would be the best fit for his skill set IMO.

Example, Brandon Spikes on the Patriots ran I think a 5.1 40 and the Pats still took him in the 2nd to play one of their ILB positions in the 3-4. If you watch their D Spikes rarely is dropping back and is always just teeing of on O lineman blowing up running plays.

Montana Grizzlies linebacker Caleb McSurdy picked up 131 tackles as a senior in 2011 and was an All-America selection. He even got a combine invite -- it didn't go well, as the Idaho Statesman's Chadd Cripe writes:

Montana linebacker Caleb McSurdy of Borah High ran the 40-yard dash in 4.97 seconds. That ranked 28th out of 29.

McSurdy tied for 29th (out of 31) in the vertical at 30 inches. He was 26th out of 30 in the broad jump (9 feet, 2 inches).

d

He might just be McSurly now.

OK, I'll show myself out with that joke.

McSurdy thought he did well, except for his 40. Said he thought his draft stock went up. See below quote from Statesman article linked above:

"“I think I helped (my draft stock),” said McSurdy, who weighed in at 6-foot-1 and 245 pounds. “I showed teams that I’m pretty intelligent and I did some good things testing-wise. If I can clean up that 40, I should be in good shape.”

McSurdy was hoping to run the 40 in 4.75 seconds. He will return to Arizona for training before participating in Montana’s pro day on March 9"

McSurdy put up better numbers than Kellen Moore in every common event, except was a few hundredths of seconds below Moore in the 40.

Ouch. Reading that site that jcu put up it kind of shows those #s weren't too solid afterall.

3-cone 15th out of 20.

20 yard shuttle 7th out of 21. His best showing by far

60 yard shuttle 10th out of 10.

Yeah, I was kind of upset when I read it. :?

I just hope he gets a shot to prove himself.

I hope he helped himself as well. When the DT from Memphis, Poe, runs a 4.98 and weighs 330 lbs...McSurdy needs to step it up a little.

Well what do you expect him to say, "I did terrible and no team is going to draft me."?

Also I'm confused as to what your last quote has to do with anything, they don't play the same position and aren't comparable players. The inclusion of it just confused me.

In McSurdy's defense, Poe put up some freakish numbers. Those are by no means normal and it isn't fair to judge him against that.

Should I even be surprised that PR didn't feel like including the "out of" part of those results? More evidence of how he tries to manipulate stats.
