McGillis debate over! Time to pay the piper!!

Mslacat

Well-known member
Three years ago on this board and the Bobcatnation board I ranted how absolutely stupid it was for Both the Bobcat and Grizzly coaches/programs were for not recruiting or later even offering Jack McGillis a scholarship. The quote from both programs was that they did not feel Jack was D-1 material. From the Kool Aid Drinkers on both boards were varied from "he could not be D-1 material because coach says he is not" to "yea, but Oregon State is not as good of team as the Griz". Over and over some of you guy's came up with lame ass after even more lame ass excuses.

Well the Griz got another shot at McGillis this summer and this time the Griz coaches jumped at the opportunity to sign up Jack. Last night all question were answered. He lead a freshman laden team from a 12 point deficit, to almost knocking off the projected starters and top 2 reserves for this years team. He played 4 positions on the court. He was the leading scorer for the night. He played great defense, he defended everyone from Rundles to Hasquet last night. On offence, he personally wore down two defenders as they tried keep up with him as he ran the base line and wing, he never stopped moving.

Debate is over. Not only is McGillis a D-1 player, he would be one of the Griz's top 2-3 player if he was eligible this year.

So, now you folk out there, and you know who you are it is time to "pay the piper". Don't worry you can make it short and sweet. Something like: "I was wrong and you were right Mslacat" would do rather nicely. Heck if you want just cut and paste the above line if it would make it easy for you. If you are really feeling apologetic you could add: "and I will never question you and your massive head on a basketball question again" but I will leave that up to you.

So there you go! there are about 12 of you I expect to see your apology posted below. chop chop get to it!! :thumb:

Will you ever tire from giving McGillis a BJ?

Since I never rate the players other than saying that McGillis wasn't PAC 10 material and the Washington coach was pulling a fast one in getting OSU to waist a Scholly. I'd say you owe me a sorry.
That being said It would be nice if you'd STFU so I could enjoy all the great things McGillis will be doing for the Griz. Including extending that run of winning Basketball games against the cats.

as always, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

i'm guessing the choice for the griz was between mcgillis and austin swift. swift was a smooth athletic player who really impressed me in the games i saw during his team's run to a california high school championship. futhermore, the team was loaded with other talent, and you had the feeing that as good as he looked, swift was submerging his talent for the good of the team. i thought his upside was considerable, and so apparently did the montana coaches. to this day, i can't fault the coaches for that judgment.

of course, mcgillis was one of those kids with the drive to be better, while swift apparently wasn't. you can't always judge a kid's heart, as any number of failed high-school all-americans from ten years ago have proved.

in summary, i give mcgillis his due--he's a great kid, he's improved his game against top-flight pac-10 competition, and all's well that ends well for the griz. but fault the griz coaches for taking swift over mcgillis? i'm not sure i can do that.

out of curiosity, mslacat, which bobcat got the "mcgillis" scholarship? and are you as hard on your buddy mick durham as you apparently are on members of this board?

Jack would have been starting for the Beavers this year. But that program is so screwed up, he did the right thing in leaving (basketball perspective). He had some very strong performances against some of the best teams in the country. I don't think he needed a strong scrimmage to prove that he deserved a scholly a couple years ago. He's proven that with his play at OSU. The doubters were wrong!

Good to see a homegrown talent playing for the Griz.

Mslacat,

I can proudly say I was NOT one of the ones who did not want Jack to be a Griz. I watched Jack was he was a little guy hanging out at Lady Griz practices, Men's practices, anywhere there was a basketball. I am glad jack is back in Missoula, and you can deny it all you want, but he is ecstatic he is in Missoula over Bozone. :thumb:

I'll admit to not having the foggiest idea who he was until early last year.

Hm..........that is odd for sure

I have a life outside this board, Swill. And I don't live in Montana to get news on the HS players there.

Cox had great handles and could really penetrate......and over time had improved his outside shot. He was too small though, without being jet quick and had a lot of trouble guarding a true point guard at the Big Sky Level. Where is he now?

He's at Columbia Valley JC in Pasco. I assume he's giving it one more shot to get picked up by a bigger program than one in the Frontier Conference.

If we're going to admit to thinking players were better than they panned out... i still think gus chase would've benefited from more playing time.

The reason he didn't get more playing time was because he was getting his butt handed to him in the paint. He was simply undersized, sorry to tell you, but he was not D1 caliber.

Once again you have managed to spout off before the kid has done anything. Yes, he is now playing for the Grizzlies, but what exactly did he accomplish at OSU? He had maybe a handful of good games and a few mediocre games sprinkled in. I, too, hope he turns out to be the next comming of Krsyco now that he dons the maroon and silver, but I'm gunna wait until I've seen something to post.

Why, why isn't his homecomming enough? Why can't you wait until after he has a big night to do this crap? Why are trying to make people who want to cheer for him, not, out of spite for your comments?

For the umpteenth millionth time, I wish nothing but the best for this kid and I am glad he is finally in a place he wants to be. With that said, he hasn't proven a fudging thing yet. Good luck Jack, and for the love of GOD Mslacat WAAAAAAIIIIIIIT! I hope the right time for your smugness comes, but I doubt it will be during Jack's redshirt season.

I disagree Cringer. Mslacat has earned his stripes repeatedly in my book.

I dont post much on BB and I have no clue on how to recruit one player from the next as far as talent. I was personally disappointed when an out of state player won out over an in-state kid, especially when Mslacat was talking up the in-state kid's talent.

This is a good point, but the fact remains I feel like all of this is underselling the kid...On only one occassion have we actually talked about his college level play (the game he dropped like 20). I hope he does well, but the next two seasons will tell what his homecomming trully means. It's a constant state of polishing plain old rocks, when who knows what gems may actually lie in store for him.

For the one millionth time, I WANT him to do well. I ALWAYS wanted him to do well. I'm not going to rant and rave over the tragedy of letting him almost slip away to OSU just yet, this is where we differ. None of it matters, he is a Grizzly now, and in another year I want to see him play well for his sake, and his alone.
