McDowell to the Portal

Let's be honest here, Junior Bergen and the defense got us to the first Natty in 14 years.

But McDowell was definitely the best option for the 2023 squad and he obviously did positively contribute to the run they had. I will forever be thankful for those contributions in what turned out to be a really fun season that blew expectations completely out of the water.

Best of luck in your future endeavors, Cliff!

Yeah, I'm sure his 13 TD passes, 9 rushing TD's, etc., etc. after not playing three of the first four games had nothing to do with getting us there.

That's the "positive contribution" I mentioned. How many 300 yard passing days or 100 yard rushing days did he have? How many 200/100 yard days did he have? On the flip side how many 100 yard rushing days did Ostmo or Gillman have? Cliff was solid. He did what he needed to do, but he never took over games and he never had elite performances. My comment about Bergen and D was mostly geared towards the playoffs, when Cliff really had some mediocre performances.

I won't be surprised if we find out that Clifton was playing hurt the last three games. He was not running the way he had earlier in the season. Granted, the defense in playoff games should be better than what we see in regular season games, but there were times these last few games he had a lot of green in front of him and elected to throw the ball away or attempt a pass that had little likelihood of succeeding. His running earlier in the season loosened up defenses. Just didn't see it on display the last three games.

Man...I'm shocked at how deep the hatred runs for a guy who got us to a Natty. Unreal.

You're mistaking nonchalance for hatred. Cliff was solid, if unspectacular. He did just enough to keep the defenses honest, which is what the team needed this year. But is it hatred for the fanbase to want an actual gamechanger at the QB position going forward? I don't think so at all.

I agree 100%. Big Cliff was awesome and definitely carried the team on his back at times but I wouldn’t say any more than the defense or some spectacular plays by Junior Bergen and the special teams. They all complemented each other to get us to the natty.

I think if our quarterback play could have been a little bit better, we would’ve had an even better shot in the chipper. Something wasn’t right with him. I think he was banged up. Hopefully the Griz can find their diamond in the rough to make that offense even better.

This will be his fifth transfer; he has shown he has no loyalty to any school or program. That's a fact, not an opinion.

I thought I had the record nailed down. Just out of high school, I was major X. Dropped out, really NOT ready for college, and went to work. THAT convinced me I'd rather be a college boy. Changed majors to X2.0. Next quarter(it was quarters back then)it was X3.0. Next quarter X4.0, until graduation. FIVE SCHOOLS! WOW! McDowell MUST have the record.

It dawned on me that this all boils down to academics. Someone, early in this post, stated he was, or WOULD BE, Psych grad. Presumably, he wants to be a Psychologist.
I know of a UM Psych major who graduated but was not accepted into UM Psych Grad School. Maybe THIS is part of the problem. He would be done at UM. Now, he would have to not only have to find a Psych Grad School for admittance, but also offer his services as a backup QB, for some nice NIL $$$.
We all view the world as football oriented. After all, this isn't t the UM Academic Forum. Food for thought.

In Psychology it is a bad sign if your graduate degree is from the same institution as your undergraduate degree. It is an indication of someone that has not had enough diversity in their schooling.

I had friend who played 4 years of college hoops. JC, D1, D2 and naia. Boxed at JC too. Graduated. I think in 4 years.

FWIW. Clifton graduated in May 2023 from Central Arkansas with BS in Psychology.

I had hoped you would lend your expertise in this area. Thank you. I DID learn something today! :thumb:

This thread reminds me why I don't read eGriz in the off season. The bashing, bickering and pontificating is not at all good for my heart, body OR soul, so ....

Gillman had 3 +100 yard rushing games this year ( Butler, Northern Colorado, Sac State)... Ostmo had 1 (Utah Tech)

Precisely. Multiple games. There were several others very close (Gillman had 97 against PSU, 86 against UC Davis on only 8 carries, 84 against Idaho on only 12 carries; Ostmo 85 against the Cats on only 7 carries). McDowell had zero games of 300 yards passing or 100 yards rushing. And that's with the RBs sharing the carries. McDowell didn't share the QB spot after the NAU game.

Again, I'm not "hating" on McDowell. He was perfectly serviceable and clearly the top QB on the roster for 2023. The team likely doesn't make it as far as they did without him in 2023. Ah Yat is more talented, but that's a really tough ask of a true Freshman in this offense.

It surprises me that he is leaving, given what I thought he thought of UM and the team, and what his tweet tag lines were recently.

However, UM will be fine and potentially better without him. I like Ah Yat, Vidlak and Huot. I assume Flowers will be very good sooner or later. There are still some qb's in the portal, and there will be more portal qb's in the spring.

McDowell didn't play great on Sunday, nor in the prior two playoff games. We needed a much better game from him on Sunday, but didn't get it. I thought he'd play better, being the championship game and in Texas.

I agree that he had a nice season and was big in taking us to the championship game. Showed nice improvement. I think he had more potential too. But he probably wasn't going to be one of the top UM qb's, in my view. Not even close.

He was not accurate enough throwing and had other limitations. Some qb experts and coaches have told me that qb's tend not to get more accurate with time and practice. They pretty much have it early or they don't. Accuracy is only one important skill for a qb, though.

My view is that the coaches never had good confidence in him, let alone full confidence. I believe they limited the offense because of that. I know they limited the offense earlier in the season. Maybe he felt or sensed the coaches lack of confidence in him.

He threw some nice downfield passes in a game or two earlier in the season, but for the most part, threw shorter passes. He didn't throw many picks, but I wonder if that is because the offense was limited with and for him. He did throw over the middle, short, relatively well.

I wonder why he seemed to quit running and scrambling in the last several games. That seemed odd. He turned down some open field and even first downs. Just seemed weird to me.

I wonder if he was having some issues with the coaches in the last game, or recent games. Don't know, just wonder. He seemed to get hurt late in the first half in the last game. I saw him running on sideline a lot after halftime, and also on the exercise bike. Had never seen him do that in prior games.

A parent told me that he never seemed to fit in. His mom told me that he and the family liked Missoula. I don't think he loved the weather, and he hasn't even had a Montana winter yet.

I liked what he said when he came to UM and a few other times. However, I thought it was odd he had committed to Southern and then changed his mind right away. Made me wonder if he was a bit flaky.

On the one hand, I wish him well. On the other hand, I think F-him. He can do what he wants. It's his choice and his life. Maybe he will get to a situation where he excels. I can see him improving, but I don't see him being a great qb at a higher level.

I assume I will get some better and more specific information. I'm curious. His departure does not concern me in the least. I think Gillman's younger brother is coming to UM. My impression is that recruiting has gone very well. I assume there are or will be schollies held back for some portal guys.

It will be interesting to see what else comes out. I don't know Nebraska has for qb's. If they are thin at qb, then he may have a nice opportunity. He could get some decent NIL money.

Nebraska has landed a top qb recruit, actually the top recruit. The recruit's uncle is the Neb. o-line coach. "Nebraska has landed a game-changing addition in quarterback Dylan Raiola, the No. 1 signal-caller in the Top247 rankings, who signed with the Cornhuskers on Wednesday morning as National Signing Day began. Raiola flipped from Georgia after a late charge from the Cornhuskers, and he becomes the highest-rated recruit in program history."

Go Griz!

Hoops, you nailed it on him. Also, I agree and think that the Griz have someone special in Ay Yat. I was impressed with him the times he got an opportunity. He exhibits really good composure and is an accurate passer.

McDowell rushed for 118 against Furman (I believe).

No way to know if Ah Yat has it. Teams had no film on him other than from his high school. He peels out the backdoor every time he feels pressure. He'll do it one too many times next year and his season will be over. I don't think for second that McDowell can play at anywhere other than Montana. Not my opinion, his history before coming here.

Maybe he just wants to be closer to home. Just played in Texas, so maybe some south school like Bayler wants him.

He is a good FCS quarterback. He is not a FBS quarterback. He might get a lower level FCS offer, but i don't see him as a Power 5 quarterback. I really enjoyed what he contributed to the program. He has a moxie that the team needed at that time. He did have some limitations, but we would not have been in Frisco last week without him.
good abridged synopsis

Talked to an assistant in Frisco about players entering the portal and McDowell was believed to be leaning that way, so it wasn't a surprise. The coach also said that Gillman would be here a couple more years because of his relationship with Green. Also, talked about current players being offered NIL by bigger programs and he said that's mythical. The bigger programs know they can get these players for nothing.

question.....does he have the run factor like mcdowell? love his passing and read ability.

Nobody saw this coming. Something has changed.
mcdowell looked gimpy in the second half, looked hurt, not 100%......i could be reading this wrong but he looked
unhappy or disgruntled.

He is not nearly big enough to run like McDowell. He could run differently, without the power and dropping his shoulder, and he can scramble, but he just isn't built to run the ball like McDowell. McDowell was special that way, he seemed to like the contact.
