McDowell back in the portal

Do we? Seems like quality teams figured him out down the stretch or that he wasn’t willing to take risks like he did when he was staking his claim to the starting spot earlier in the season.
Or we take him at his word that he was hurt, he wasn't unwilling.

Too much drama ... time to move forward and not relive past decisions...
I'd rather be thinking about how some of our new recruits and players from last year squad who stayed around are going to impact the '24 Griz. Lots to be excited about including a favorable schedule...

I would love to be able to say adios if we had any QB on the roster with enough DI snaps as a starter to form a sample size to determine he can play, let alone multiple.

My opinion is that the “you left, so you’re dead to us” portion of our fan base might do well to get over itself a little bit. I love the Griz, but we are an FCS program in a very rural state. I feel fortunate that a proven DI player would entertain the idea of playing here. I guess I don’t care if he was here before or not. Thats for coaches to sort out.

Lastly, weekly reminder that we have another QB on the roster who bailed on us in the past, but we were all high on him last spring and I don’t remember people taking issue with him transferring in. 🤷‍♂️

After reading through this thread I hope Cliff comes back just to make some of you sooooo mad :devilish:
Yeah, unfortunately, there is still a portion of this fan base that seems to give extra points for being “homegrown” (read into that what you will). The only downside to Clif coming back would be if we had a worse season than 2023. People would be on here claiming we would’ve won the NC if we started Clint Stapp (or whomever).

You know, when you take the old girlfriend back, the old issues quickly resurface and its never really the same, let alone better. And your relationship with all your buddies who told you "good riddance" and who are now miffed, are wrecked or at least never quite the same. I know the emotion ignoring WAAC fans here think these things should be ignored by the team or the team can let the coaches work things out, but desperation is never a good reason to take back an old flame, or old flame thrower. Injured or not, its no surprise a guy with a history of such indecision in picking a college would show that same indecision on the filed in crunch time.

Those are valid points. But the previous QB bailed before he ever stepped foot on campus. He never developed friendships with teammates. Didn't put out a tweet about running it back and then in transfer portal 48 hours later. This whole ordeal put the coaches in a difficult position. Fife came in with an understanding of where competition might be at also. It is a difficult decision for coaches to bring him back. Cliff did a great job but I'm not sure if the possibilty of this causing harm to team chemistry is worth it. That will be the biggest question to me. As much as he changes his mind is there a possibility he doesn't show up this summer? He won't be in school this semester and I would guess can't participate in any team conditioning etc.. He should start as #4 on depth chart and have to earn the trust of coaches and teammates again in Fall.

But if a staff was counting on player commitment and then flipped and failed at the next level for years, then asked to come back? Different in what way(s)?

Good explanation that addresses my question in the post above. I don’t disagree at all that he should have to earn whatever he can get back if he comes back.

It’s an interesting point you make about developing friendships and wanting to run it back versus a dude who committed and flipped before he set foot on campus. Gotta wonder what the players think in such a situation, which is why the “player vote” rumor makes a bit of sense to me.

Yeah - bottom line how I feel about it if he does come back:
- I wish he didn't leave initially
- If coaches are ok with having him back and team/teammates are okay with having him back - then, fine by me if he does indeed come back.

The possibility of his being allowed to come back, is a kick in the teeth to any QB on the team. They bust their collective ass and actually COMMIT to staying, the coaches then say, 'We're letting him come back, but has to compete with you guys. Doesn't matter that he f*cked us over three months ago, we're gonna give him a chance........to do it to us again!'

And what about the rest of the team seeing this sh*t? 'Hey, they do it to the QBs, they'll do it to us in a heartbeat!' Team dedication GONE, team morale GONE, Griz Football....DONE with. Slippery slope to oblivion.

Bobby may have brought the Griz back, but it would be short sighted stupidity if he lets this self-serving nut case back. The only thing Bobby should give him is Jerome's Havre phone number.

Fair. These are also just rumors as far as we know as well. Bobby gets to coach the team and add/remove players how he chooses.

If the rumored team vote does happen and they choose for him to stay, then fine by me. Also fine by me if Bobby and/or the team say "kick rocks" and he doesn't come back.

Other thing I will add is....winning tends to make things more tolerable. If the team didn't win nearly as much last year with McDowell at the helm, I imagine this wouldn't even be a topic at all.
